Coal Tar Alternatives

As of July 1, 2015, it is illegal to sell, use or permit the use of coal tar
pavement products on property in Prince George's County. Coal tar has proven
to cause serious health problems and it also negatively affects aquatic
life.

Alternatives to using coal tar are:

. pervious concrete

. paver systems

. latex sealants

. asphalt-based sealants

Contractors performing pavement work on your property are required to use
coal tar-free products. You may request an ingredient list or a copy of the
Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) that lists clear ingredient
identification. Doing the work yourself? Know the best practices and use
them. Most local home improvement stores and other retailers carry
asphalt-based or latex sealants. Any offenders will be subject to a fine of
up to $1,000 per day for each violation.

Prince George's County Second Nature is an initiative of the Department of
the Environment, Redevelopment Authority, and Office of Central Services to
promote cost savings and sustainability in our everyday behavior.
