Student Opportunities
What majors can apply?
We accept all majors. However, most opportunities are for students majoring
in business, economics, sociology, psychology, geography,
cartography, demography, mathematics, statistics, computer science, and
information technology.
What type of work would I be doing?
Assignments vary depending on the office in which you are placed. At
Census, you will have a meaningful experience that will utilize
your background and will fine-tune your analytical skills.
Would I be paid for my internship?
All internships provide a stipend or salary (GS Schedule for Federal Interns
and Recent Graduates) that helps you pay for housing, transportation,
and other expenses. Intern salaries generally meet expenses during the
duration of the program. Census also offers unpaid internships.
What is the internship duration?
Most summer internships last approximately 10 weeks, Fall and Spring
Internship last approximately 15 weeks. Typically, internships start the
first
week of June and end the first week of August. Postsecondary Internships are
also available during spring and fall. Pathways also offers spring and fall
internship opportunities
that may last more than 10 weeks.
Are all internship opportunities in Washington DC?
No, we have internship opportunities at different Regional Offices across
the nation and at our headquarters in Suitland, Maryland, a suburb located 2
miles south of Washington, DC.
What about housing and travel arrangements?
Most programs, except Pathways, assist students in finding housing.
However, students are responsible for
housing expenses. Round-trip airfare is arranged and provided at no charge
to Postsecondary interns.
What about transportation?
The Census Bureau is accessible by public transportation, including bus and
Metrorail. Most housing suggested by the internship programs is located in
areas reasonably
near a metro station. For additional information regarding the public
transportation system, please visit www.wmata.com.
How is the selection process?
Since we have a limited number of internship opportunities, the selection
process is very competitive. Managers select candidates based on area of
study, skills, and GPA after
reviewing applications from the various programs. If you are selected, you
will normally be notified no later than the first week of May (for summer
session).
