LEGISLATIVE PROCESS UNDERWAY FOR ADOPTION OF NEW ZONING ORDINANCE

The County Council, in partnership with the Prince George's County Planning Department, is conducting a comprehensive update of the County's 50-year-old Zoning Ordinance to streamline zoning laws and create a user-friendly document supporting the County's vision for smart growth, economic development and improved quality of life for residents.

In 2014, the Prince George's County Council adopted the Plan 2035 General Plan, which prioritized an update to the Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision Regulations (ZOR) as a critical step for our County.

It describes the various zones, lists the uses permitted in each zone, specifies densities and sets forth the procedures to change the zones. The ordinance establishes standards for the location of structures, building heights, setback and other area requirements. Zoning categories allow residential, commercial or industrial uses at varying densities or intensities. Some of the more recently adopted zones permit a mix of compatible land uses, subject to certain standards.

The Prince George's County Council is now considering legislation through a robust legislative process. The County Council will host multiple Committee of the Whole Work Sessions on the Zoning Ordinance Rewrite legislation.
