MDOT SHA BEGINS THREE RESURFACING PROJECTS IN PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY

These Three Projects Will Improve More Than Five Miles Five Miles of Pavement

(October 30, 2018) –The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is underway with three safety and resurfacing that total $7.1 million and rehabilitate more than five miles of pavement in Prince George’s County. Preliminary work has started in all three areas.

MD 4 (Pennsylvania Avenue) between MD 458 (Silver Hill Road) and the Washington D.C. line and MD 4 between Forestville Road and I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) in Suitland<https://goo.gl/maps/w2ZWcCfyWx62>.

MDOT SHA is resurfacing 2.8 miles of MD 4 in Suitland. In addition to milling (removal of the top layer of asphalt), paving and restriping, the $4.3 million project also includes repairing and replacing concrete curbs and gutters, installing ADA-compliant ramps and sidewalks and cleaning drainage pipes and inlets.

Construction barrels and cones will guide motorists through the work zone. Motorists can expect single lane closures on MD 4 weekdays, 9 a.m. through 3 p.m. Nearly 30,000 vehicles use this section of MD 4 each day, so motorists are encouraged to allow additional commuting time. The project will be complete fall 2019.

MD 202 (Largo Road) between MD 214 (Central Avenue) and Prince George’s Community College in Largo<https://goo.gl/maps/XuKJ4QVY2VK2>.

MDOT SHA is resurfacing nearly one-mile of MD 202, as well as repair or replace concrete curb and gutter and replace/upgrade existing sidewalks. Motorists should expect single lane closures between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. Sunday nights through Friday mornings. The $1 million project will be complete fall 2019.

Crews will use barrels, cones and arrow boards will guide motorists through the work zone. Approximately 32,000 vehicles use this section of MD 202 each day.

MD 201 (Kenilworth Avenue) between Edmonston Road and Good Luck Road/Campus Drive in College Park<https://goo.gl/maps/P69GeUeGbvH2>.

Finally, MDOT SHA is underway with a project to resurface nearly 1.5 miles of MD 201 in College Park. The $1.8 million project includes pavement patching, milling, paving and restriping. Crews will also construct concrete bus pads and upgrade concrete medians, curb and gutters.

Motorists can expect single lane closures on Kenilworth Avenue Sunday nights through Friday mornings between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. and occasional single lane closures on southbound MD 201 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. north of MD 410 (East-West Highway).

Nearly 40,000 vehicles travel on this section of Kenilworth Avenue each day, so motorists are encouraged to include extra drive time during work hours. The project should be complete fall 2019.

MDOT SHA’s contractor for all three projects is Francis O. Day Co., Inc. of Rockville.

Last summer, MDOT SHA reached a major milestone by resurfacing or treating half of all state highway lane miles since 2015. This milestone marks the improvement of nearly 8,500 lane miles, calculated by miles of highway multiplied by the number of lanes, improving safety and enhancing the customer experience for millions of drivers across the state.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
