Sarah -
Since you were watching the kids that night, I related your story to
Chief Parker about suspicious cars stopping in Ward 2. He strongly
affirmed that you did the helpful thing by calling the police every
single time you saw a problem.
Taking things back to the staffing issue, as Chief Parker did: our
mutual aid pacts with other town give us the assurance that we are
always able to respond to serious calls and emergencies. We can bring
responders in minutes whereas the county police may take hours.
However, we can't activate mutual aid assistance for routine patrols.
Currently, when we allocate police to responding to a call, routine
patrols essentially stop. When patrols stop, the police lose their
eyes and ears in the community. The town police are as eager as the
rest of us to return to the staffing levels we had achieved under Mike
Herman's administration, because they believe that reenabling routine
patrols will reduce crime.
While the police are still stretched too thin for the patrols that we
need, it is all the more important for neighbors to keep a lookout for
each other and phone in suspicious activity.
