Okay, I've gotta "chime in" here to this discussion.  Loud chimes  
during sleep hours are a real problem (esp. for us light sleepers).    
I've lived near chimes that are set to *stop* chiming at 10 pm, and  
then start up again at 8 am, so I know it's possible to respect  
common sleep hours.  (also, I would think the loud chimes at night  
would violate some noise ordinance ....)
