Marc and others,
I'm probably not in the best position to answer because I haven't been following the issue, but that's never stopped me before...
There's a proposal for multi-family housing [I'm not up to date on what's being proposed, but I know it's not stick-built, single family houses] on the block where Dumm's market is currently located. I've caught snippets of concerns about the project, along the lines of too much traffic, insufficient parking, out of character with the neighborhood, could be detrimental to nearby property values if it's improperly maintained, and (inhaling deeply for this one) it could attract the "wrong" type of people to the neighborhood. There, I've said it. I have no dog in this fight, so I don't mind bringing it up.
There are also arguments in favor, but I have even less confidence that I have a grasp on those. If done properly, it could result in more attractive than what's there now [I don't know what would be torn down to make way for it], it could provide a critical mass of new residents nearby to make the town center more viable, it could attract the "right" type of people.
Anyway, NOT SPEAKING FOR BRUCE, the content of Bruce's message suggests another possible concern, that the project might not be viable. I don't know if it is, but I was trying to make the point that we can't rely on nationwide trends, or even Bethesda (which was mentioned in the article) to help us figure that out.

hello town talk,
this is my first post to the digest, so please bear with any protocol
mistakes.
why was the "weiss research" article posted to town talk?
it seems to me that posts that are not specifically focused on town
issues, or specific real estate project issues, are not relevant to this
listserve. if one wants to begin a general discussion about the overall
state of the real estate market, economy, or national policies, then
offer the idea, provide the links to the sites one wants others to
review, and embark on the discussion privately or offline.
thank you,
marc
