I have heard good things about Hillhaven on Adelphi Road. Minimal complaints, family management, etc.

 Hope this helps,

Hello Riverdalians 0r is it Riverdale Parkians? Hmmmm.

Anyhow, I'm in the unenviable position of needing to check out some nursing homes for a friend of mine for short (hopefully) term care.

What have you heard/experienced about Crescent Cities? Do you have any knowledge of Heartland of Hyattsville? Are there any other facilities in the area you would recommend? Warn me about?

This is a new experience for me, so all replies will be appreciated!

And by the way, has anyone noticed how nice our public flower beds are looking? Our Public Works folks are doing a nice job!!

Emily, Sue, Nancy, Gerald (and others)

I have so enjoyed your Riverdale Park train stories. I am under a very
tight project deadline this week (was hanging out Friday and Saturday with
my dance partner Emily at the 1800s Regency Ladies House Party at
Riversdale!!), so when I get the TownTalk, since I only have a few minutes,
I immediately scan for the articles with train nostalgia. Immediately, I
find peace and tranquility. I just love those stories! I grew up near a
train track, too, in North Carolina. As Gerald said, "Thanks Emily [and
others]. It's thoughts and memories like these that give meaning and
character to our little town of Riverdale Park."

We must collect them and publish our own little book of your thoughts about
train history in Riverdale Park, um, call it Train of Thought, And other
Riverdale Stories. Ok, kidding about the book name, but not about the idea.
(Self-publish or do we have an publishing company representatives,
developmental editors, acquisition editors in our beloved Riverdale Park who
could get it signed by a company?) What say ye?

 Iris

I don't want to imply that that your memory of the Good Humor Truck is
like the 5 mile walk to school, up hill, in the snow, but I remember the
 Good Humor Truck also.

The differences I remember between then and the local guy now are 1)
They use to be in tune, 2) played more than 4 bars of the one song over
and over and 3) were melodic vis harsh synthetic sounds.

The truck by my grandmother's had real bells. the player was like a
music box and he had several drums he could put in for different songs
(yes I was a geek even then). The one by our house was a glockenspiel
(The good humor man taught me that word). It didn't 'go nuts' when the
truck was moving like the bells did. A REAL STEP UP!

I don't know if the truck in Riverdale Park is broken, out of adjustment
or just cheap, but it is not music. It is noise and is not going to
 generate "good memories."

Yes, we need to tolerate the sounds of our neighbors "living." I
learned all of songs our neighbor sang while as she washed dishes.
Living cheek to jowl is nothing new. Being less considerate of others
 may be.

 Sarah,
I could not let pass without comment your 'squeaky wheel' reference in a
discussion about noise! Oh the SHAME of it all!

Love it, love it, love it!

 All,

While Sarah provided the noise ordinance, we have a much older law that is
 more applicable.

Chapter 36 has to do with trash and garbage collection. Call the Code
Officer with your complaints. Let Ms. Ferguson contact Crescent Cities and
Jemal about their contractors' violation of the law. Call the police during
the day and ask to speak to Capt. Timmons. Let him know that you will be
calling when you hear the arrival of the trash truck and you expect the
available officer to respond to let the driver know that he is violating the
 town's law

In Chapter 36, you will find the following: Note 36-9(b).

36-9. Independent or commercial collection of garbage, trash, and waste.

 (a) All garbage, trash, and waste collected by an independent or commercial
agency shall be contained in a container or receptacle made of durable
materials, watertight, provided with a tight cover, and shall be so
constructed that the contents can be easily removed. All such containers
shall be placed at the rear or rear side of the premises at all times, until
readied for collection as provided in this section, except that the
receptacle shall not be adjacent to a public street, if at the side shall
not be immediately adjacent to residential housing, and if at the rear shall
not create a nuisance and a public health hazard to the immediate
 residential neighborhood.

 (b) Collection of such garbage, trash and waste shall be between the hours
 of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

 (c) Any waiver or variance from the aforesaid conditions, that is, location
of receptacles and hours of collection, may only be granted by written
permission from the Mayor and Council for good cause shown.

 (d) All special refuse containers or "dumpsters" (except those temporarily
placed on a property due to construction, renovation, or rehabilitation),
whether or not serviced by independent or commercial agencies, shall be
screened on up to three sides by an enclosure consisting of chain link fence
with woven slats, stockade-type or board-on-board fence, or other similar
type screening enclosure constructed from chain link, painted or treated
wood, or other materials approved by the Council, and shall be of sufficient
height and type so as to block or screen the special refuse container or
dumpster from street-level view. Gates in the fence or enclosure shall be
kept closed whenever the special refuse container or dumpster is not being
loaded or unloaded. Waiver of any or all of the requirements of this
subsection may be approved by the Council upon application for special
refuse containers or dumpsters that are not visible from public thorofares
or which under the circumstances cannot be practically screened.

 36-15. Violations and penalties.(Repealed and replaced 5/23/97.Effective
 6/12/97)
 (a) Generally
Violations of ?? 36-2 through 36-14 of this chapter are declared to be a
 municipal
infractions, the penalty for which shall be fifty dollars ($50) for each
 initial offense and one
hundred dollars ($100) for each repeat offense, which is defined as an
 identical or substantially
similar violation committed within thirty (30) days after the initial
 offense.

 Hope this clarifies things.

 Gerry,

Thank you so very much. This is all great information and much appreciated.

I spoke with Mr. Biddle at code enforcement today. I'll be speaking further
with him now that I have this info.

 Thanks again,
 Jay
