[RP TownTalk] Traffic Concerns

Is having a traffic cop direct the train track intersection during rush
hour(s) a farfetched idea? There seem to be too many different
problems/variables at this intersection to solve with some type of automated
technology (or combination thereof). At minimum, this would make it safer
for pedestrians. I personally find the Rt. 1 / EW Highway intersection more
dangerous to cross on foot. A lot of traffic (at least heading West on
Queensbury) is cut through traffic from EW Highway--it is much easier to get
across Rt. 1 by going Queensbury to Rt. 1 to EW Highway than it is to just
stay on EW Highway and wait through the cycles of the light at Rt.1 to let
you through. When not restricted, Queensbury is also a great direct route to
the Metro station (unless more one-way/do-not-enter-during-these-times
restrictions are put in place, people will continue to use the shortest,
most direct route). Are there any other dangerous or very busy intersections
of concern for Riverdale Park besides Rt. 1/EW Highway and Queensbury @ the
train tracks?

It's a real shame the dead chicken problem has not continued, because we
could have just had a rotating civilian volunteer force tossing dead
chickens on to oncoming traffic to slow things down. Maybe when the warm
weather comes back...

Yes, Alice, the Md. SHA has an engineer whose job is to help local
governments with traffic issues on non-SHA roads. I invited him to look at
a traffic calming issue in my Ward in Hyattsville, and he had some good
suggestions that eventually made it into the recommendations of a
Neighborhood Design Center traffic-calming study for the street.
(Incidentally, at least one of the recommendations broke SHA regulations for
SHA-controlled roads, but we weren't burdened by that limitation since this
was a City street.) I'd have to sift through old notes to find his name and
contact info, but your traffic committee could probably find him by calling
the SHA headquarters. -- Chris Currie

Is there cooperative technical assistance available from the county or
highway administration that the town could tap? Even though we are
talking about town streets, we have a regional traffic problem
traveling through our town. Would be great if they could lend a
traffic engineer to liaise w/ our traffic committee.

Alice
