> Q1) How is the program is structured? For example, are these are pick
> up games or do the kids sign up as teams?
> A1) It is managed pickup, definitely not formal teams. Each night we
> put kids onto balanced teams, sometimes we let kids pick teams. We
> sometimes use hockey style substitution if the situation warrants. We
> would need lots of gym time to run a team-oriented league.
>
> Q2) What is the commitment level (e.g., is it ok if a kid signs up for
> Thursdays, but misses every third week)?
> A2) Absences are part of usual winter behavior and we built that into
> our approach. We accept up to 20 kids per hour. when everybody shows
> up, we split the group into four teams, play teams 1-2 for 15 mins
> then swap in teams 3-4. When we don't have a full house, kids get
> more playing time.
>
> Q3) What are the age ranges? Do boys and girls play together?
> A3) 8-10 year olds play from 6:30-7:30. 11-14 year olds play
> 7:30-8:30. Boys and girls play together. kids end up enjoying
> playing with a new mix. they also enjoy playing in an age-mixed group.
>
> Q4) Do you have to already be on the team or be a super player?
> A4) A lot of kids play on the HMB rec teams, but we have players from
> all backgrounds joining. All players are welcome.
>
> i'd also like to note that NCSA will also be running a similar but
> separate program at the Salvation Army gym in Edmonston, starting in
> January. Jim Wildoner may put out an announcement about that pretty
> soon. a lot of the approach we use at Hyattsville Elementary was
