I believe (though I am not at all sure, and as they no longer have a
computer :-( so they can't answer for themselves) the burglars found a
door in the back that they could shove open (though it apparently took
some work.) As their back door is hidden from the street view, they
had plenty of time to do this unobserved.

I find it interesting/disturbing that this is the same pattern noted
by Mark Molino's neighbor.
