Hope everything is going well in your community.  I wanted to share  
with you some of the activities happening in the County in February,  
including several opportunities/scholarships for our youth.  If you  
could please distribute this to your community members, I would  
greatly appreciate it.



Upcoming Events and Announcements

Job Openings Reminder
Gaylord Hotel, resort and conference center at the National Harbor is  
looking for prospective employees.   They are having a “grand  
hire” event at the site from January 30 – February 2nd.  To apply  
for jobs, do so immediately at www.gaylordnational.com.  There are  
job descriptions on the website as well as an explanation of how the  
process will work.

Bus Stop Shelter Upgrades
The Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and  
Transportation is conducting a study of our County bus stops.  If you  
know of a bus stop in need of a shelter please call my office at  
(301) 952-3060.  Please be advised that all recommendations will  
undergo evaluation by DPW&T.  Suggestions are needed by February 8,  
2008.

Second Annual Back to the Delta Project
Colours is a music program based in our local County Schools.  In the  
coming months the student-mentors in Colours will be hosting the  
second annual "Back to the Delta Project." Last year, the student- 
mentors not only formed a living, breathing blues band in honor of  
the Delta Region, but they raised $15,000 for five student programs  
in the Delta Region. They did not do this alone.  Please consider  
doing the following to support this excellent program.

1. Visit www.colours.org and learn more about this year's event.
2. Get involved by joining the 2008 Honorary Blues Council
3. Plan to be at their event at Northwestern High School, the weekend  
of Feb. 21st - 23rd, 2008, at 7:30 pm.
4. Support the student efforts through the advertising program

This year they are also looking for local and national businesses to  
have the student led Splatt Blues Orchestra come out and perform and/ 
or distribute information about their efforts.

Upcoming Central Kenilworth Corridor Community Meeting
The Prince George’s County Planning Department is preparing a  
revitalization study for the Central Kenilworth Avenue to identify  
issues confronting the area and prioritize an action plan.  A  
community meeting will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2008 from  
9:00 am to 2:00 pm to discuss progress and prioritize action items at  
Templeton Elementary School (6001 Carters Lane Riverdale, MD).

Maryland Department of Transportation
The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) is currently  
updating the State’s long range transportation plan, known as the  
(MTP).  The MTP establishes a 20-year vision of transportation in the  
State and provides policy direction through statewide goals and  
objectives.  Throughout the coming months, MDOT will be conducting  
extensive public outreach to engage Maryland’s citizens, agencies,  
and interested organization to help revise the transportation  
system’s long-range goals, and objectives.

We encourage you to participate in helping to shape the MTP.  For  
additional information and to learn about upcoming events, review  
draft goals and objectives and participate in an on-line survey visit  
their website: www.mdot.state.md.us/Planning.  If you have questions  
or concerns, please call Mr. Ron Spalding in the office of Planning

Scholarship Opportunity
The Prince Georges County Federation of Park and Recreation Councils  
represents approximately 80 Recreation Councils, Civic Associations,  
and individuals interested in promoting parks and recreation within  
Prince Georges County.  The Federation will award its 17thscholarship  
in parks and recreation next spring.  The $500 scholarship will be  
awarded to a Prince Georges County resident student who is currently  
or intends to major in recreation at a recognized college or  
university.  The deadline for applications is May 15, 2008.

Annual Governor's Volunteer Service Awards Ceremony
Governor Martin O'Malley and Lt. Governor Anthony Brown are once  
again seeking nominees for the 25th Annual Governor's Volunteer  
Service Awards.  The criteria for selection of the 2007 award  
winners, nomination forms and additional instructions are available  
atwww.gov.state.md.us or by calling 410-767-1216 or 1-800-321-VOLS.  
All nominations must be postmarked or faxed no later than March 3, 2008.

Prince George’s County Youth Employment Services (YES)
YES has over 6000 pre-screened, prepared youth who are excited about  
helping your business perform while your permanent staff is away on  
vacation.  Help provide excellent job opportunities for our youth to  
prepare them for tomorrow.

BIZ 2008: A Summit and Showcase for Young Entrepreneurs
The Biz 2008 Summit will give young entrepreneurs an opportunity to  
network and strengthen their skills.  A business plan competition  
offering scholarships, grant awards and potential internship  
opportunities to winners will also be part of the summit.  All Prince  
George’s County high school and college student business owners or  
students with a desire to own a business are encouraged to apply and  
attend.

BIZ 2008 will take place during National Entrepreneurship Week,  
Saturday, March 1, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Camelot of Upper  
Marlboro, 13901 Central Ave in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.  To apply or

Gladys Noon Spellman Scholarship Applications Available
The Prince George's County Women's History Month Committee has  
established a scholarship in the memory of Congresswoman Gladys Noon  
Spellman. Ms. Spellman was a celebrated public servant of Prince  
George's County for more than two decades.
Applications are now being accepted with the following criteria for  
interested candidates:
Candidate must be a Prince George's County resident.
Candidate should be in the 12th grade (already accepted into college).
Candidate should be planning to major in government, criminal  
justice, political science, public administration, Fire Science or a  
health related field.
Candidate should have outside interests and activities, including  
community
service.
Candidate must be in good academic standing and demonstrate financial  
need.
Candidate must be able to attend the Annual Women's History luncheon  
at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 20, 2008 at Martin's Crosswinds.
Applications must be received by Monday, February 25, 2008.  To
