friends and neighbors,
Next Friday and Saturday, Joe's Movement Emporium in Mt. Rainier will
be hosting an Environmental film festival. Hopefully, these films can
help create a mindset which overcomes fear and isolation in dealing
with some of the most serious problems we face today.
Please see listing below with a schedule of screenings from Joe's web
site. <www.joesmovement.org>
You may have seen some of these films already, but if you haven't,
they are highly recommended and many will inspire you in these
uncertain times. Of local interest, 'Lessons From the Waterfront: the
Anacostia,' was made by DC teens; and 'Vieques: Diary of a Struggle'
was made by Marika Hoffman Suval who many know from her yoga classes
in Hyattesville and Mt Rainier.
The admission price is very reasonable so pass the word on to others.

The Story of Stuff
Dir. Annie Leonard, 2007 - 6:00pm Runtime: 20mins
From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in
our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is
hidden from view. The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-
filled look at the underside of our production and consumption
patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge
number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to
create a more sustainable and just world. It'll teach you something,
it'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all
the stuff in your life forever.
Lessons from the Waterfront: The Anacostia
Dir. Multi-Media Training Institute, 2005 - 6:30pm Runtime: 33mins
A video project by DC teens about the Anacostia River and the
neighborhood that shares its name. The budding filmmakers speak
confidently about the river's past, its present-day pollution and the
cleaner future that many envision.
Kilowatt Ours: A Plan to Re-Energize America
Dir. Jeff Barrie, 2007 - 7:00pm Runtime: 55mins
Award-winning film Kilowatt Ours: A Plan to Re-Energize America is a
timely, solutions-oriented look at one of America’s most pressing
environmental challenges: energy. Filmmaker Jeff Barrie offers hope
as he turns the camera on himself and asks, “How can I make a
difference?” In his journey Barrie explores the source of our
electricity and the problems caused by energy production including
mountain top removal, childhood asthma and global warming. Along the
way he encounters individuals, businesses, organizations, and
communities who are leading the way, using energy conservation,
efficiency and renewable, green power all while saving money and the
environment. This often amusing and always inspiring story shows,
“You can easily make a difference and here’s how!”
Vieques: Diary of a Struggle
Dir. Marika Hoffman Suval, 2008 - 8:00pm Runtime: 25mins
Vieques, an island of the United States territory of Puerto Rico,
was, until 2003, a naval base, used for bomb-dropping tests. Such
actions were taken without consideration for the health and welfare
of the island's inhabitants and, therefore, sparked a string of
protests.
Vieques: Diary of a Struggle documents this injustice, as it is seen
from the eyes of the people--particularly a grandmother who has
watched her descendants succumb to cancer and her beloved island
squashed into a mere fraction of itself.
The Digital Dump: Exporting Re-Use & Abuse to Africa
Dir. Basel Action Network, 2005 - 8:30pm Runtime: 25mins
The Digital Dump: Exporting High-Tech Re-use and Abuse to Africa
exposes the ugly side of an escalating global trade in toxic,
obsolete computers and other e-scrap collected in North America and
Europe and sent to developing countries by waste brokers and so-
called recyclers.
In Lagos, Nigeria, the local experts complain that as much as 75% of
the imports are “junk” and are not economically repairable or
marketable. Consequently, this e-waste, which is legally a hazardous
waste is being discarded and routinely burned in what the
environmentalists call yet “another “cyber-age nightmare now
landing on the shores of developing countries.”
Trashed
Dir. Bill Kirkos, 2007 - 9:00pm Runtime: 75mins
Trashed is a provocative investigation of one of the fastest growing
industries in North America: the garbage business.
The American waste stream is fast approaching a half billion tons
annually. What are the effects all this waste will have on already
strained natural resources? Why is so much of it produced? W ho is
affected most? And who wants America to make more?
Trashed analyzes the causes and effects of the seemingly innocuous
act of “taking out the garbage” while showcasing the individuals,
activists, corporate and advocacy groups working to effect change and
reform.

Generation Earth
Dir. Jeff Barrie, 1995 - 12:00pm Runtime: 44mins
Generation Earth is an action-packed survey of hands-on environmental
programs. The video's two college-age producers take viewers across
America as they search for successful projects in both rural and
urban schools.
They find students involved in a wide range of creative activities in
their schools and communities. These include environmental auditing
of their campuses and local businesses, monitoring water quality,
gardening and composting, mentoring younger students, seeking
environmental justice, writing letters, and creating slide shows,
documentaries and newspapers.

The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil
Dir. Faith Morgan, 2006 - 5:00pm Rumtime: 53mins
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a
tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80
percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships
and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban
people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned
from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using
organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens. It is an unusual
look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis, which they
call "The Special Period." The film opens with a short history of
Peak Oil, a term for the time in our history when world oil
production will reach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever.
Cuba, the only country that has faced such a crisis – the massive
reduction of fossil fuels – is an example of options and hope.
