Neighbors -
When are kids going to be trick-or-treating on Friday? Before sunset or
after? Or both.

In the past, trick-or-treating has started at 6 pm and is over by 9
pm. The younger kids are out earlier, the older kids (and the
drive-bys (as I call the people who drive their kids into the
neighborhood)) are out later.
If you want trick-or-treaters, turn on your porch light!
If you don't - you'll need your house to look completely dark from the
outside.

A long, long time ago, our town council declared that
Trick-or-Treating in Riverdale Park is 6?8 p.m., Oct. 31.
To my knowledge, no council has since revisited the issue.
Back then, Daylight Savings Time (DST) ended in October so it was
fully dark by 6 pm. However, these days DST does not end until
November (details below).
Halloween is this Friday Oct 31 and Sunset will be at 6:08 p.m. with
twilight ending at 6:36 p.m. So if you start at 6 pm you can get much
of your trick-or-treating in before it becomes truly dark.
If you prefer to not have little goblins begging at your door, please
turn
off your porch and outside lights. If you run out of candy, turn the
lights
off too.
And kids, please do not approach dark houses! Ever.
Check www.pgparks.com/things/calendar.html for lots of Halloween parties
and events for young and old alike.
Daylight Savings Time Ends
DST ends on the 1st Sunday in November. This year that will be this
Sunday,
Nov 2, 2008. On Sunday we "Fall Back" one hour (2 a.m. becomes 1 a.m.).
You gain one hour of sleep. Forget to set the clock back and you will be
at
church an hour early. It will get dark really early Sunday night with
the sun setting
at 5:06 p.m.
Remember to check your smoke alarm batteries twice a year. So stay
up late Saturday night and at 2am in a sleepy fog set all your smoke
alarms back one hour and test your clocks, or something like that.
For exact sunset/sunrise times visit
http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneDay.html
And see http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/index.html for everything
about daylight saving time.
