CALL FOR ARTISTS
The Prince George’s County Art in Public Places Program (AIPP) invites artists to apply for a public art project
for the new St. Joseph’s Fire/EMS Station in Largo, Maryland. Artists and/or artist teams should submit an
application demonstrating qualifications for consideration to design, create, and install a site-specific original
exterior work for this new fire/EMS station in Prince Georges County. The project affords an exciting and
significant opportunity for meaningful public art in this growing, but stable community.
 
ST. JOSEPH’S FIRE/EMS STATION – LARGO/SPRNGDALE/GLENARDEN AREA
The work will be installed on a solid brick 35’ X 8’ wall at the front of the new St. Joseph’s Fire/EMS Station.
The station will be located on St. Joseph Drive near Ardwick-Ardmore Road across from C. H. Flowers High
School in Largo. The wall and entrance to the station faces St. Joseph’s Drive. The work must reflect the
unique character of the community and the setting of the fire station. The work must be installed on the wall, be
durable, and suitable for outdoor conditions. All exterior mediums will be considered such as acrylics, mosaics,
metals, clay, ceramic, mixed media, and others.
 
BUDGET
$34,000 for the total project. Includes all fees and
costs for final design, fabrication, installation, and
documentation of the installed work.
An honorarium will be provided to each finalist
and/or finalist team for a preliminary design..

THE SITE: ST. JOSEPH’S FIRE/EMS STATION
An exterior work will be installed on a solid brick 35’X 8’ wall at the front of the new St. Joseph’s Fire/EMS
Station. The wall will be visible from the street by pedestrians and vehicle traffic on St. Joseph’s Drive near the
intersection of Ardwick-Ardmore Road in Largo and across from C. H. Flowers High School. The artwork
must reflect the unique character of the community and the setting of the fire station.
The future St. Joseph’s Fire/EMS station will be built to improve service delivery and emergency response
times in the Largo, Springdale, Glenarden, and surrounding communities. The station will be a 5-bay full
service station with a fire engine, basic life support ambulance, a rescue squad, ladder truck, technical rescue
support, and EMS supervisor.
 
PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY ART IN PUBLIC PLACES PROGRAM
The Art in Public Places Program (AIPP) is Prince George’s County’s one percent-for-art program and is
responsible for the acquisition and installation of works-of-art for new County government buildings or major
renovations of existing government facilities. The program integrates art in highly accessible public settings
within County facilities to:
 Visually enrich the environment;
 Provide opportunities for artists to work on a large scale in a public context;
 Increase citizen recognition of the ability of artists to significantly and beneficially contribute to the
visual enhancement of public settings and communities; and,
 Help stimulate economic benefits for the arts, businesses, and tourism.
The AIPP is administered by the Art in Public Places Panel. The AIPP Panel appointed by the County
Executive and County Council.
 
SELECTION PROCESS
THREE FINALISTS SELECTED TO DEVELOP PRELIMINARY ARTWORK PROPOSALS -- ONE PROPOSAL AWARDED
 The AIPP Panel makes the final selection.
 A Project Advisory Committee (PAC) appointed
by the Panel consists of:
o County architectural & design
professional(s);
o Arts community representative(s);
o Community representative(s);
o Art in Public Places Panel member(s) &
administrator;
o Building occupants; and,
o Others with special interests in the project.
 PAC reviews applications, which are evaluated
based on the artistic & technical merit, style,
suitability to the site & location, & strength of
past work.
 PAC will recommend up to three (3) finalists to
the AIPP Panel.
 Finalists will have an opportunity to meet with
the PAC & to participate in a site meeting to
gather background information about the site &
project to assist in developing a preliminary
artwork proposal & scale model.
 Finalists will individually present proposals &
models to the PAC. PAC will evaluate materials
and submit package & comments to the AIPP
Panel.
 Proposals & models may also be viewed by
other key stakeholders, whose comments will
also be presented to the AIPP Panel.
 The AIPP Panel will select one proposal to be
developed & installed by the winning artist or
artist team based on the PAC’s evaluation &
comments from other key stakeholders.
 The selection will be based on artistic
excellence; innovation; qualifications;
appropriateness of the artwork to the site in
terms of scale, form, content & material;
durability of the artwork relative to theft,
vandalism, and environment; and, community
support & interest.
