Hey Bruce-
I agree with you that littering is a MAJOR problem in this community. There are a few citizens like Del and Emily who clean up our streets ( Ravenswood Rd. and Layette) every day. There is always regular supply of empty beer bottles, torn up lottery tickets, etc.. from the apartment residents evening visits to Dumms.
That's just our few little blocks....
I know the homeless people who live in Riverdale Parks park land and wooded areas leave much nastier kinds of "waste" beside beer bottles.
Let's hope the "green machine" is a big help to us regarding that situation..
But..
If as a community, we honestly want to deal with the trash situation, it needs to be addressed in serious manor.
I can understand you suggesting that people get tickets for littering. That may be a part of a solution.
I think we should launch a full town effort to raise awareness about littering. There has to be federal, state and county programs that were successful in the past that we could implement or borrow from. What happened to the keep America Beautiful Campaign?
Maybe some federal money is available for something like this ?
We could use the new "Green Machine" to rally interest in dealing with this problem.
Children at Riverdale Elementary should have a lesson component of why you do not litter.
there should be a standing article in the Town crier discussing the anti Litter campaign.
We need signs that say "if caught Littering you will be fined...." all over the town.
We could have the council people from each ward get on the Mic at the farm market and remind the citizens not to litter.
we need to have a sign from the town of Riverdale Park that is posted in all stores that sell "to go" anything in the town limits that says if caught littering you will be fined.
I fact, if trash from any particular store is consistently found as litter, the business owner should have to attend some kind of educational program to raise their responsibility level.....or perhaps fined as well.
If we can stop people from smoking in businesses, we can stop them from littering.
Littering is ignorance.
Littering was stopped in the 60's, and it surly can be stopped today.

Alice
Great news, how about we ticket people that litter. We can use the money to help pay for the "Green Machine".
