Thank you for your post; I've felt the "sting" myself at times, when I've posted a question or comment.  Constructive criticism is one thing and I don't mind some joking back and forth; however.... !

As for the tree incident; unfortunately, there ARE people out there who steal trees for the firewood, for the tree itself, etc.  Firewood is expensive from what I've seen and there are people out there with no concience who will take what isn't theirs.  Sad but true.  Due to construction, the bad storm, etc., we're losing far too many trees in town as it is, I'm sorry these trees were vandalized.

DearFellow TownTalkers – If folks aren’t comfortable making inquiries on this list for fear of being denigrated or starting a flame war between others – I think that’s very unfortunate and we should consider how we can all communicate more civilly and try to dial down the anger and hostility.  I have seen numerous “discussions” in the last couple of months – starting with a seemingly innocuous comment or question - result in insults or insinuations being hurled back and forth or just back.

Even if you genuinely think someone is being - fill-in the blank with negative item – consider is it appropriate to publicly insult someone? Would you say it to their face if you were talking to your neighbor over the fence?

So will the next comment be an angry diatribe that dissuades civil discourse or a more measured response that encourages community interaction?

Lisa Grob

Guys,
You don't have to argue with one another on my account.  I didn't want to start any bad bloodbetween neighbors over my tree issues.  I just thought I would ask on town talk since all of you live around me.  From now on I guess I will seek information elsewhere.
Carol

>I do not mean to throw a rock in this discussion, but don't you two guys think your responses are a bit "male chauvinist?"   If the lady says the top of her tree is missing, while previously it was just leaning, that strikes me as a clear indication someone removed it.  As to why someone would have done it, in my 63 years I have seen a lot of complete idiots hacking up trees under the guise of "pruning."  I have even tried to explain to a few that pollarding was invented centuries ago in Europe for the sole purpose of peasants stealing firewood from the rich, landed, gentry.  Some so called arborist was contacting people in Hyattsville after the storm telling them that their trees needed to be "topped."   To the best of my knowledge no one fell for the ploy.  Do any of the bank security cameras point towards the injured tree?

>>Hi! Carol, I’d have to second Bruce’s response. The entire area received record level snowfalls Feb 1-10. I’m guessing that if you were in the hospital during this time, that is likely the culprit behind your poor cypress tree’s unhappy beheading. A drive around the area also shows that coniferous trees seem to have been hit particularly hard by the snow – loads and loads are broken and in a similar state to yours. Could this be your answer?

>I need some help.  Sometime in the last 2 weeks (I have no exact idea due to the fact I was in the hospital), the entire top of one of my leland cyprus trees was cut off and removed.  I live in the house all by itself on 44th place (between Suntrust bank and the Dental Group building).  The tree in question was one of my big ones along my fence line between Suntrust bank and me.  I asked Suntrust if their landscapers (Brickman) had done it, but OF COURSE they knew nothing about it.  I called the town just to make sure they didn't do it, and they assured me that public works would never cut a tree on private property.  I am pretty sure that Suntrust's landscapers did it because it was hanging over my fence after the snowstorm, but they don't want to admit it due to the fact that what they would have done would have been illegal.
>I was hoping that maybe someone in the neighborhood saw someone cutting the trees in that area in the last 2 weeks.  If you did or know someone that might have, please let me know.  Those trees are the only privacy I have between the businesses and my home and now one is missing about 6 feet of tree.  I can only hope it will grow back.
