I really like Joe Kelly's idea, I would definately support this visionary
concept if the Cafritz family would go for it.
The only sticking point is that the Cafrtiz property is within 1/2 mile to
the metro. That puts it in the category of "smart growth" and "transit
oriented development." If you want to learn more about these concepts check
Wikipedia.

It's not too late to be heard. It's not too late to be active in our own
town. Here's a note I sent to our council:
Gentlemen:
I ask for your support for an idea I believe will change Riverdale Park
forever. I need your voices to be among those who say to every party
involved, "This plan has merit. This plan needs to be carefully and
thoughtfully considered. This plan will work. This is what we want. This
is what we need."
The attached letter will give you a brief outline of my idea. I would be
happy to discuss it in more detail with you individually or
collectively.
A development of this sort would benefit Riverdale Park immensely. It
would put the town's name in the forefront of all communities currently
involved in the "smart growth" movement, not only locally, but
nationally and internationally. It would give Riverdale Park a shot in
the arm like no other possible land use could: showing the world a new
way of living on the earth.
Its unique direction should be universally welcome in our area. It would
be a boon to our town, the surrounding towns, the county and the state,
showing that we are aware and active in facing the world's most pressing
problems and finding solutions now, not when it's too late.
It would breathe new life into the town. Should the council still have
interest in following recommendations of 2008's retail market analysis,
there is no better way to spur development of "green" businesses at town
center. It will allow the town to retain its small town charm and
greatly increase its image as a great place to live and work. It is an
idea whose time has come, and it should not be allowed to fade behind
the comfort of known practices. There are many tried and true approaches
to developing communities. There are none that are infallible, though,
and the remediation of failed development is a much more difficult job.
This community needs to be built, and it needs to be built here.
This community can be built, and it can be built here.
Sincerely,
Joe Kelly
Pro or con, I'd love to hear your opinions.
