This store has been a mess for years and the powers that be seemed to refuse to upgrade it. Of course its a low profit store, people had to stop shopping there because of its condition. For Thanksgiving i dropped in for a few items and they had more stock than I've seen in years. It was good not having to drive to the Hillendale safeway. I just hope its replaced with a mulicultural grocery store unlike every store in Langley Park.

Neighbors, you should know that a sign on the door of the Hamilton Street Safeway announces the closing of the pharmacy in just a couple weeks. The cashiers are candidly describing their take on the whole store closing down within weeks. They describe it as a headquarters' decision based on low profit from this store.

Love it or not, the Hyattsville Safeway has been a neighborhood institution for way more than 30 years. It is an easy walk for all of us in West Hyattsville, has bus access and plenty of close free parking.
I have found the pharmacists to be knowledgeable and helpful, as are the friendly long-time cashiers and other employees. Many of us rely on this store for basic groceries and supplies.

Do any of our city officials/council people know of this loss to our community? I am concerned that while we are distracted by Riverdale Park's grocery dreams our own store will die without a whimper. Does anyone else out there believe an effort should be made to save this store?
