Thousands of local students work with Anacostia Watershed Society each spring to
 grow wetland plants and raise baby fish from eggs -- and their hands-on learning
is also helping to improve the Anacostia River. Students throughout the watershed
eagerly await their spring projects.
Just ask Vanessa Ford, science teacher at Capitol Hill's Maury Elementary School.
Vanessa's students are already laying plans for their project -- they will be caring
for the delicate eggs of the shad fish, hatching them in their classrooms to release
back into the Anacostia River come spring. Gone for decades because of the Anacostia's
pollution, we can give the historically abundant shad a chance to swim again.
The students love the project so much that they start asking to visit the river 
on the very first day of school in September! When the big day comes to release 
the baby fish -- fry -- into the Northwest Branch, the students make signs and write
songs like the chant above to wish their young friends well on their journey.
