This sounds to me like the argument I use to have with my mother. To 
quote, "If everyone else jumped of a cliff, should you?"

Not sure how that pragmatic/principle argument worked out when we were 
discussing the timing of my first beer.

Now as then situational ethics has its draw backs. Seems this gets us to 
the lowest common denominator. Not very high aspirations.
