[RP TownTalk] Redistricting/gambling

As far as I'm concerned, people can gamble away every cent they have, it's their choice. And they can do it here, Atlantic City, or anywhere else they choose. But I seem to remember not that many years ago, when local charities were running table games, that the County and the State - who were apparently NOT getting a cut of the action - closed the games down. Morally wrong, don't you know. Victimizes the poor, you see. Criminal element involved, of course. And so on. However, NOW, when the govt. IS getting a cut of the gambling funds, all of a sudden it's perfectly fine and good for the State, and so on, and nauseum. And I've yet to have any politician answer my basic question - why is gambling SUCH a hot item this year, why the big push to get the casinos in?

I don't see why we should prevent table games while allowing slots, nor why we shouldn't profit here in PG County. But, like the Cafritz thing, we've got one chance to get the best deal we can -- once we accept (if we do) we're unlikely to change it for the better -- and I don't think this is it. We get 50% of the Lottery's take; why should we get less (half as much) for new gambling? I am for making them come back with a better offer.
