The Calm After the Storm
November 2012
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last month our water quality specialist installed a new trash trap on a tributary
of Paint Branch in College Park, thanks to a partnership with Prince George's County
Councilmember Eric Olson. He finished it just in time to test out in Hurricane Sandy
earlier this week. And it worked! The trap is designed to bypass during extreme
rain events, so there's no danger of it backing up or coming loose.
A trash trap catches litter that floats, like plastic bottles and Styrofoam, to
prevent it from making it to the river and eventually the ocean.  Our two trash
traps keep more than 2 tons of trash out of the river each year!
New Long-Term Volunteer Opportunities!
Have you wondered what else you can do to support the Anacostia Watershed Society
in its effort to protect and restore our Anacostia River? Look no further!
AWS is currently seeking individuals from throughout the watershed and beyond who
are interested in sustained engagement. These longer-term volunteer opportunities
include a variety of tasks -- everything from assisting with our river trips and
 leading restoration events to helping out at the office with data entry or campaign
tasks.
If you have experience paddling, working with youth, engaging communities, assisting
with campaigns, or managing databases, we'd love to work with you.
Interested? Please visit our Jobs [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001RMVokygC9YUDN-svib3SEUXyvToRAHCY4ZmVf9sQJXoXDHOb7VuUPq6IMVnDiC__w7BacztF2BsxjwCDmxVMjEuzX7DZnSaFsNs4nMG9IdgueIJUueSHiLtyYEuBe5EkWNJ54ZNKPGhFZ1OcYDrXIBukmuETrWeA]
