Thanks for the reminder, Steve! I'd also add - this is getting into a "busy season" for firefighters. With the onset of cooler weather and the holiday season, people will be using fireplaces, candles for holiday decorations, space heaters, etc. Please, if you use ANY heat/flame-producing device, make sure you use it properly and safely And - if you have a generator for power outages, please use it according to directions! As they used to say on Hill Street Blues, "Let's be careful out there."

Subject: [RP TownTalk] Check Your Smoke Detectors and CO Detectors
To the residents:
Five residents of Oxon Hill will killed by carbon monoxide last April due to a faulty heating system in their home. This is needless.
When you set your clocks back to Eastern standard time tonight, this is also a good time to check your smoke detectors and your carbon monoxide detectors. Press the test button on the device. If no sound is emitted, change the battery and press the test button again. If there is again no sound, replace the device.
Don't forget to talk to your family about two ways out from every room, in case of fire, and have a designated outside meeting area.
If you have questions about smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors, contact the fire station or the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department at 301-886-SAFE (7233).
Steve Lamphier, President
Riverdale Fire Department
