[RP TownTalk] Cafritz Public Hearing on Traffic

Friends and Neighbors -

 

Just to clarify - tonight's meeting is a public forum to discuss all things
related to traffic.  From sitting in 100s of hours of meetings over the last
15 months on the subject this is one of the top 3 concerns of most.  Several
very important issues to be aware of that could be issues the public should
provide input on:

-Traffic Study

-Transportation Management Plan

-Transportation Demand Management District (initiatives towards decreasing
traffic especially single-occupant traffic)

-Connections - Ingress/Egress (Route 1, Rhode Island/Maryland Ave/Crossing
over CSX)

 

>From a design perspective and success of the project this is one of the most
important pieces to 'get right.'  For example the University of Maryland is
proposing a bridge crossing that would end up landing at a new 'T'
intersection where the trees currently are just north of the Field of
Dreams.  CM Thompson and I are adamantly opposed to this given the amount of
traffic (especially heavy delivery trucks) that would be dumped directly
onto Lafayette, BUT public input is needed to ensure that ALL parties
understand this option is DOA.  There are two very viable alternatives that
put the crossing on the north end of the property behind the ERCO building.

 

Speaking of ERCO (the boarded building at the end of Lafayette), there was a
series of posts a few months ago about the history etc.  The Maryland
Historic Trust has given the green-light to the University of Maryland
(current owner) to demolish the building.  As a pilot who has many hundreds
of hours in ERCO's engineers later designs that move would leave a bad taste
in my mouth.
