Love Your River!
February 2013
Want to get involved in river protection this spring, but not sure how? See below
for just a few examples of the variety of awesome ways you can participate. We look
forward to working with you!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Interested in the birds and bees?
Us too! Our SONG (Saving Our Native Grasslands) project is bringing back native
birds and bees by restoring the health of meadows in the Anacostia watershed. But
we can't do it without help from our volunteers!
Last fall, elementary school students, with help from adult volunteers, built birdhouses
suited for native species like the Eastern Bluebird. Now that spring is on its way,
we are looking for a few interested folks who can help us install these houses as
the birds begin looking for their new homes! Please join us on February 16 at 2
pm for a bid house installation. For more details and to register for the event,
 click here [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001zLh5kHJNDsdaHrQTtGgNWD2wM7EA6DROAVA9zOjrqNpnP8mwgqfugR35sujwMd5phuJygiT3CMDmdmN6MDyzO7j3R4i3BlClj9_VnC6RUFwCAyqY5y25w6un6tyhqx75M_-PS1ur7uFkfs2ZLgr1yxTZrUTmlY4t75QDDMbZPGs=].
An ecosystem with a diversity of plant and animal species is a strong ecosystem;
 by strengthening these habitats we are contributing directly to a healthier Anacostia
River. You can be a part of this rewarding effort!
Love those trees?
We do, too! That's because trees do great things for our watershed! Their branches
provide shade that lowers water temperatures to a livable degree for fish and other
wildlife; their roots hold soil in place to prevent erosion that would otherwise
 cloud water downstream; plus they filter toxins and pollutants out of rain water
on its way to the river, provide life-giving oxygen, and are a source of beauty
and tranquility for all.
This spring, AWS will be planting hundreds of trees along the Northwest Branch of
the Anacostia River. To give our little trees a fighting chance, we need your help
to remove the invasive plants that could potentially outcompete them. The first
in a series of invasive plant removals is scheduled for Friday, February 8, and
we need your help! To register for the event, click here [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001zLh5kHJNDseOUXcMb3ryBEpD3xSCLhjJeSPALWrjygADPunhLr0IfUMsmb4TWVRsraKsiU9O3khtVdQP-UnFs7vTHuDAYJSri0ktcp3BMuul9-bGKkdvj8AwHLsJ_VwTDnY22ksCaheyKmq_-QtkEcewx3EDqcAuucgAqv23c2c=].
This is a great opportunity to learn more about the native flora and fauna of the
Anacostia River Watershed, be a part of a larger stream restoration effort, beautify
the local community, and meet other folks who love trees just as much as you!
Have a bit more time to spare?
The search is still on for folks interested in leading our volunteer and recreation
events. Please contact our Membership and Volunteer Coordinator at 301-699-6204
ext 109 or mkoenig at anacostiaws.org [mailto:mkoenig at anacostiaws.org] if you are interested.
Benefits include gaining experience leading and speaking with large groups of individuals,
learning more about local history and ecology, meeting other like-minded folks,
and experiencing the beauty of the Anacostia River! All necessary training is provided.
