This photo is of Gwynns Falls in Baltimore. Thousands of plastic bottles, tossed
into the streets and washed down storm drains during any given rainfall, perhaps
like the one we've had today.
We could end this pollution -- this year.
Maryland could be on its way to tripling its recycling rate, and dramatically reducing
litter from bottles, cans, and plastic bags. Imagine what that could mean for the
Anacostia River!
While we continue to push Maryland to follow Montgomery County and DC's lead with
a fee on disposable bags, we also excited to share that the General Assembly will
be considering a bottle bill this winter.
A bottle bill [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001WX--MxXAI1MY4EDeLVxjjWMgmcinA6RVEyQLU7v28Yl5rRM1tTBJComgoIyOk1Qp5I2nEM9xVoVwxW4vIp0U4FQ-Dmox_xztXZoUpNoiCxaaGUl9EF1-7hGh-iuIKxq6]
applies a 5-cent refundable deposit on every glass, aluminum, and plastic beverage
bottle and can sold in the state. When you return the container for recycling, you
get your 5 cents back. As we know from the bag fee, a nickel is a powerful motivator.
While Maryland currently recycles just 22% of its beverage containers, states with
5-cent deposits recycle 75% or more of theirs.
To recap, we are working with our friends in the Trash Free Maryland Alliance [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001WX--MxXAI1NFzUJ_JrjT12z5oFFjnBZUyRvRiWeSmM6Lti9Iqitvz7sweqq_unoTDY1xspUP7d0k7JGGzCdYA-5f26gFbR5UuYHtsKJBqwwWth6pWqPHdw==]
to support three proposals to reduce trash pollution. We need your help on all of
them:
- Allow Prince George's County to pass a disposable bag fee. [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001WX--MxXAI1P_eYl-ldChrJWlaoE9DlqX0yHmcMMnatwAl6NW-B8-lQ77RK7wGOPvC2QwD8Cwlykdm2pw-WmI7YasgyfS9JIY60vjEDARhtdrJPhtZnHEUT6ood4AyAKqmBWuzl5lPMxgMzkPGl0Ej4IWhiXTZ1eQ_B1Koyj6rXsu3EOqoI0ceqnY6DBWUBsZ]
- Enact a disposable bag fee for the rest of Maryland.
- Create a bottle deposit system. [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001WX--MxXAI1P4TwM9TXoMuE2c23OPhREjOHTgqV4qSF7voOriQUJx-0nxuZQo-qbJoEtj7kSR4rv8g-UV-K19ItoDBk964Xp70-PYX0DvViWVDGbZzv7Tvu_rLZpxELKhwLILLIhJ49JGmnPRt0O05AF4LRfjWxc319kLmZVfaIsIerjJwOUDwxrlkm6cv9NTbMgJbP_RkWE=]
I have a few seconds.

to find your state legislators. Then call them and tell them you support a disposable
bag fee and a bottle deposit, and you hope they do too.
- Write a letter to the editor of your community paper. Say how litter affects you.
(Need a tip sheet? Email us! [mailto:jlawson at anacostiaws.org])
I have a few hours.
- Help us reach more people. We'll be calling local residents and collecting petition
signatures. We need people for this Saturday morning and next Monday evening; more
dates to come.
- Come to Annapolis and meet your legislators. We can help you get a personal meeting.
Or attend the Environmental Summit [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001WX--MxXAI1MVIZRj0e6D9GohhkL-8gMjeBKAwO89d6nclosP5L3Xn-93_YEf1Lwdw0Ot24lfkU0AmZO4NSK7aiQVe_e17lRGpUJW4trj_wLDdVwgnq_rZJz6_2cAswBH]
on Tuesday, January 29, from 4:30-6 pm.
