Maybe this needs clarification.  The trucks belong to a contracting firm, not the County.  The County took a low bid on recycling service.  The contracting firm is the one giving its workers inadequate equipment.
By the way, if anyone wants free shade-loving begonias, I have a bunch potted up and for free at the end of my sidewalk at 4004 Queensbury.  The have pink blossoms, winter over, and spread.

I agree with you Nina.  The trash workers have to work with ill working equipment.  Not their fault.  The fault lies with the people who run the county.  Let's all email our county exec,  and county council.  Maybe they can change the laws so that the criminal who was our county exec would not get the pension benefit when he leaves jail and the money can be used to buy working equipment for the lowly paid trash workers and maybe give them a bonus for working on these hot days.

We have had similar problems in Hyattsville; however, may I mention that it is horribly hot and that all the contractor trucks that I have seen recently have not had operating lifts.  That means the guys on the trucks are having to lift and dump the huge toters of recycling.  I asked one of the guys a few weeks ago about the lifts; he said the one on that particular truck had been broken for weeks.  My husband talked to one of them last week in the early evening and said the guys looked awful after having worked more than 8 hours.  Of course, that is how contracted out services frequently work; the employees get shafted so the owners can make money on the contracts.

Adrienne and all, 

We (Town Government) have contacted the county twicein the last 18 hours--recycling is a county service--regarding the large scale failure to pickup in our area.  I'll get the complaint line number and be back with it shortly. 

This is a systemic failure--at least 4 of the last 5 weeks a significant part of Riverdale Park (and surrounding areas) have not had their recycling picked up in a timely fashion. Your town government is acting as your advocate to get this situation corrected ASAP!
