[RP TownTalk] Dog Parks and Trails Nearby?

Andrew - Welcome to Riverdale Park, and to TownTalk! I'm not a dog owner,
so hopefully others with better and more up to date knowledge will chime in
here. But if you haven't discovered the network of trails officially
called "Anacostia Tributary Trail System
<http://www.pgparks.com/Your_Parks/Trails/Anacostia_Tributary_Trail_System.htm>"
but usually referred to locally as simply "the bike trail", I hope you'll
find it to be both people- and dog-friendly. One easy access point to our
local piece of that system (which is the Northeast Branch Trail) is on
Riverdale Rd just east of the elementary school, right at the rickety old
bridge (which is long overdue for replacement!). You'll see signs and
markings indicating that the trail crosses the road there. If you go north
on the trail, you'll go through one of the several riverside parks in the
area and then continue on to the College Park Airport, and eventually Lake
Anacostia (where there are also restroom facilities!). You can continue on
from there on the Paint Branch Trail which takes you under Route 1, through
campus, and eventually up as far as Home Depot at the Beltway. This trail
bridges under all the roads except for Riverdale Rd and Cherry Hill Rd.,
which makes it especially enjoyable to use. If you head south from
Riverdale Rd., the trail takes you along the levees, then joins up with the
Northwest Branch Trail that takes you to West Hyattsville Metro, the Sligo
Creek Trail and points northwest! It also connects you to the Anacostia
Trail which eventually will connect to DC and a host of other trails, some
of which are still in construction or planning stages.

There's also of course the newly-opened local trail that follows the old
trolley line (parallel to the railroad tracks) between Franklin's and our
Town Center, and will connect up with the College Park portion of that
trail in the not-too-distant future.

There are dog parks in College Park (right on the Paint Branch Trail next
to campus at Mezzerott Rd (sp?), and a new park in Hyattsville which I
believe is on Ager Road. I don't know the policies regarding use of those
parks by non-residents. There has long been a dream of a Riverdale Park
Dog Park, but I don't know the current status of that project.

Hope this is helpful!
