50th Anniversary Celebration of the Hyattsville Branch Library

Join community members, municipal, county, and state officials and notable guests on March 2 at 1:30 p.m. for a group photo, followed by a card signing and reception. Guests will meet in front of the library at 6530 Adelphi Rd. Since it looks like another big, county-closing snow event, this is also a great opportunity to get to the library before the snow falls. In the event of inclement weather, we’ll meet in the large meeting room in the lower level of the library. The celebration continues from 2 to 4 p.m. in the large meeting room, where there will be fun historical photos and information, art activities with ArtWorks!, live children’s music with Hyattsville’s very own Audrey and Rick Engdahl, face painting, refreshments, and more. This is a great opportunity to share memories about the library and discuss and celebrate its past, present, and future. The event is for all ages and FREE.

In many ways, this is also a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the modern PGCMLS. For many years, if Prince George’s County residents wanted to visit a library, they had to chase down a mobile library, visit a store front location, or travel to Montgomery County. It wasn’t until a concerted effort by library director Elizabeth B. Hage that a $1 million bond was finally authorized to fund construction of libraries throughout the county. The Hyattsville branch was the first of these modern libraries, opening on March 2, 1964 and ushering in the library system’s modern age. Please, join us in celebrating this momentous occasion.
