October is a chance to learnmore about the War of 1812 and the Bicentennial with some unique chances to go“Beyond the Battle.” Local organizations have developed several great programsto keep interest alive for the War of 1812. Maryland Milestones/ATHA Inc., StarSpangled 200 Inc., and other partners have provided matching support for theseprograms.
 
·        Saturday, October 4: Alight dance theater will premiere Frontline: Women of a ForgottenWar at 3 and 8 p.m.at Bowie Center for the Performing Arts (15200 Annapolis Rd, Bowie, MD 20715).The piece tells the often-overlooked stories of the era’s women who lived inMaryland and Washington, D.C.Through a fusion ofdance, music, and narration, Frontlineexplores the burdensshouldered and the opportunities seized by women as a young nation sent itshusbands, fathers, and sons into war once again. The piece features the storiesbased on women from the time period. The program will also feature a reprise ofDependent by resident choreographer WaylesHaynes. Dependent investigates the public’s perception and personal experiencesof military families in this contemporary era of war. The piece, whichoriginally premiered in March 2014 at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., examineswhat it means to be a military dependent in modern times. 


 
Tickets for theperformance may be purchased online at www.alightdancetheater.org and are $15for general admission, $10 for students, seniors, and military, and free for childrenyounger than 12 years. 



·        Friday,October 10: Learn about the Ghosts of Dueling Creek and take a Night Hike atthe Bladensburg Waterfront Park (4601 Annapolis Road, Bladensburg, MD) startingat 6:30pm.  Get some hot cocoa, warm overa campfire, and hear takes about the Dueling Grounds. Then take a night hikealong the Anacostia River Trail with a guide. Free, but advanced reservations are required and space is limited. Ages7 and up, please. ·        Saturday,October 11: Beyond the Battle Symposium: Bladensburg’s History in Context willbring scholars and community researchers together to discuss their work aboutthe era around the War of 1812 at the Hornbake Library on the University ofMaryland, College Park campus. The program opens at 8:30am and runs until 5pm.Scheduled presenters include Maya Davis, Mark Leone, PhD, Dennis Pogue, PhD,Richard Ervin, Donald Creveling, Noel Broadbent, Peter Brice, Joanna Blake,Mark Hildebrand, John Peter Thompson, Susan Pearl, Douglas McElrath, andkeynote speaker Alan Virta. ·        Saturday, October 11: The Prince George’sPhilharmonic will perform a special concert commemorating the era of the War of1812 at 8pm at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts (15200 Annapolis Road,Bowie, MD 20715). Charles Ellis conducts with Mariam Adam on clarinet.Pieces include: Rossini’s Overture to Tancredi; Mozart’s Clarinet Concertoin A Major, K. 622; Wagner’s Siegfried’s RhineJourney from Götterdämmerung; Rodgers’ Victory at Sea: SymphonicScenario for Orchestra; and Beethoven’s Wellington’s Victory. 

Single Ticket General Admission: $20, Seniors: $18, Age 18 and under free(ticket required). Single Tickets go on sale the night of the concert beginningat 7 pm, cash or check only. All seating is unreserved.

·        Sunday,October 12: A Tri-National Folk Dance Exhibition presents BicentenniALE atBladensburg Waterfront Park, 4901 Annapolis Road, Bladensburg, MD between Noonand 3pm. Morris dance teams from England, Canada and the United Statescommemorate the 1814 Battle of Bladensburg and the Burning of Washington.Special guest teams are the Winchester Morris Men from England and the TorontoMorris Men from Canada. Local teams include Arlington Northwest Morris Women,Foggy Bottom Morris Men, Rock Creek Morris Men, and maybe more! Morris dancingis a lively English folk dance with roots as far back at the 16th century.Stick dances, "hanky" dances, and dances used in processions andparades will be performed. The high-energy music is performed live on accordions,concertinas, fiddles and other acoustic instruments. Program is free, parkingon site. 



·        Friday,October 24: Learn about the Pirates of the Chesapeake with a Campfire and BoatTour at Bladensburg Waterfront Park (4601 Annapolis Road, Bladensburg, MD)starting at 6:30.  The campfire and cocoawill warm you, but the scary tales of ghosts and pirates may chill you! Bundleup and take an exciting boat tour down the Anacostia River, but beware of theghostly pirates on shore and on the river waiting to come on board! Free, butadvanced reservations are required and space is limited. Ages 7 and up, please.Call Prince George’s Parks and Recreation at 301-927-8819 for more details. 


 
·        Saturday,October 25: The CROP HOP (A Cycling Tour of So. Maryland Farms) is a bike tourdesigned to highlight the connection between farms, fresh food and good health,and to help provide fresh farm foods to low-income families in SouthernMaryland. Prince George’s County, as 2014 host, has included farms where riderswill enjoy food grown and raised locally at each stop and during the after-ridepicnic. The event features four spectacular routes through the scenic SouthernMaryland countryside – a metric century, a 35 mile loop, a 17 mile loop, and afamily friendly route. Registered riders will receive a FREE commemorativeT-Shirt and lunch while supplies last. Rides start and end at historicNottingham (Nottingham Road, Upper Marlboro, MD), where additional events willbe taking place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Non-bikers can also participate incanoeing and kayaking throughout the day. During the War of 1812, armiesmarched and fought on farms along the Patuxent River, so in addition to cyclingto farms, canoeing, and kayaking, families will also be able to enjoyeducational, entertaining period re-enactments.
