Greenbelt Dance Company Commemorates War of 1812
Greenbelt, Md. (September 23)—During the War of 1812, theblurred lines between the battle front and the home front thrust women intocircumstances that tested their bravery and creativity. These women, while notnecessarily in the historical spotlight at all times, made significantsacrifices and contributions. Greenbelt-based alight dance theater will honortheir stories in a theatrical performance.
Alight dance theater will premiere Frontline: Women of aForgotten War on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 3 and 8 p.m. at Bowie Center forthe Performing Arts (15200 Annapolis Rd, Bowie, MD 20715). Created as a part of“Star Spangled 200,” a commemoration of the War of 1812, the piece tells theoften-overlooked stories of the era’s women who lived in Maryland or Washington,D.C.
Through a fusion of dance, music, and narration, Frontline exploresthe burdens shouldered and the opportunities seized by women as a young nationsent its husbands, fathers and sons into war once again. The piece features thestories based on the following women from the time period:• Betsy Bonaparte, a Baltimore socialite andbriefly the sister-in-law of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte• Rosalie Calvert, mistress of the RiverdaleMansion, in present-day College Park, Md.• Dolley Madison, first lady of the United Statesand wife of President James Madison• Mary Young Pickersgill, the seamstress creditedwith constructing the Star Spangled Banner made famous by Francis Scott Key• Kitty Knight, a folk heroine credited withsaving homes in Georgetown, Md., from being burned by British troops• Sukey, a domestic servant of Dolley Madison whowas known to be the first lady’s constant companion during these war years
Bedlam, a Bowie-based ensemble that specializes in Americancolonial vocal and instrumental music, will provide live accompaniment for thepiece.
The program will also feature a reprise of Dependent byresident choreographer Wayles Haynes. Dependent investigates the public’sperception and personal experiences of military families in this contemporaryera of war. The piece, which originally premiered in March 2014 at Arena Stagein Washington, D.C., examines what it means to be a military dependent in moderntimes.
Tickets for the performance may be purchased online atwww.alightdancetheater.org and are $15 for general admission, $10 for students,seniors, and military, and free for children younger than 12 years. Discountedgroup rates are also available. Frontline was made possible through generousfunding by Maryland Milestones / Anacostia Trails Heritage Area and StarSpangled 200.###
