Dear Community Members,
I am writing to share information with you about the Maryland State law which allows for the the sale of liquor on Sundays in Prince George's County and the businesses in the Port Towns, Riverdale, Cheverly area which have applied for a permit
SPECIAL SUNDAY SALES PERMIT - PG COUNTY LIQUOR LICENSES: As you may be aware, during this last State of Maryland legislative session, "Alcoholic Beverages – Prince George’s County – Seven Day Sales PG 318–15" was signed into law and became effective July 1, 2015. This Act allows for certain PG County business establishments to apply for a permit to lawfully sell liquor (15.5% or higher) seven days a week with Sunday sale hours from 8:00 AM to Midnight.
These are businesses with a:
Class A: A liquor store with a license for off sales of beer, wine, and liquor
Class B+ Restaurant/Liquor Store: A restaurant with a license for to serve beer, wine, liquor with an attached but separate liquor store with a license for sale of beer, wine, and liquor.
AVAILABLE PERMITS: The PG County Board of License Commission may issue up to 100 "Special Sunday Sales" permits. There are approximately 167 business which were eligible to apply between July 1, 2015 and July 31, 2015.
$50,000 INVESTMENT REQUIREMENT: The Board of License Commissioners' Rule Book indicates that business establishments applying for a "Special Sunday Sales" permit must commit at their hearing before the PG County Board of License Commissioners, to reinvest $50,000 into the business over the course of the year following the issue of the permit. The Board has the power to waive the investment requirement.
FOOD SERVICE REQUIREMENT TERMINATED: If an Applicant with a Class B+ Restaurant license is granted a Special Sunday Sale Permit, the establishment will no longer be required to serve food as a condition of operation.

PERMIT HEARINGS: The Board of License Commissioners intends to schedule hearings for Special Sunday Sales in September 2015.
COMMUNITY ACTION: Community members may wish to visit the above businesses and meet with the business owners to make suggestions on how business may be improved prior to their hearing before the Board of License Commissioners in September 2015. Community members may also weigh in during the hearing process to express support, support with conditions, or opposition to a business application for a Special Sunday Sales permit.
