I would like to extend an invitation to all interested in the monarch
situation to attend a talk that will be given at tomorrow night's
meeting of the Prince George's Audubon Society and the Patuxent Bird
Club. The program is free and open to the public, and takes place at the
College Park Aviation Museum, off Cpl. Scott Drive. See our website
Prince George's Audubon Society <http://www.pgaudubon.org/> for
directions. The program description follows.

Monarch butterflies are in deep trouble. Once found in great numbers
throughout North America and much beloved for their multi-generational
migration from Mexico all the way into Canada and the northern United
States, monarch populations have declined nearly 95% in recent years.
There are many reasons for the decline--the loss of migratory habitat,
the rapid disappearance of critical food plants, the negative effects of
new classes of insecticides, extreme weather events, disruptions of
winter roosts, and more. No one factor is solely responsible, but the
fact is that the monarch population has crashed and some experts fear
that the northward migrations of this species may soon simply cease.
Recently, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agreed to review a petition
to list the monarch as a federally endangered species under the
Endangered Species Act.
But there is hope for this seriously threatened species. Restoring
habitat for monarchs, planting milkweed, and ensuring that there are
food plants along the migration routes of monarchs may be able to turn
the tide and stop the decline. And citizen volunteers working with
their local and state park and recreation agencies and other public
landowners can play a critical role in directly helping to save this
disappearing species.
This informative program will cover actions that you personally can take
right now, this year, to attract, feed, and propagate more monarchs on
their migration. It will also provide information on how you and your
family, friends, and communities can take action as citizen volunteers
working with your local park and recreation and public lands agencies.
Richard Dolesh, vice-president for conservation and parks of the
National Recreation and Parks Association, will discuss the most
important action steps that individuals and parks can take to improve
monarch habitat, create monarch Waystations, engage volunteers in
citizen science, connect kids to nature, and engage both park staff and
the public in responding to this national conservation challenge.
Whether you are already committed to the cause of monarch conservation,
or if you are just learning what needs to be done, there will be much
new for you to learn and new resources for you to discover how you can
do more to help turn the tide for monarchs. In addition, you'll hear
some great ideas on how you and your friends can contribute to public
education and conservation stewardship for this valuable wildlife species.
I hope to see many new faces there Tuesday night!
