Athracnose is a common disease of dogwoods in our area. See link for identification and treatment.

Although dogwood is still on the MD approved tree list, I think redbud (cercis candensis) is a better choice. It is a robust native small ornamental.  

If you have a dogwood, watch for signs of anthracnose and treat immediately.
