I haven't seen Michelle at the bus stop but, if anyone sees her again AND she's looking for assistance (which it sounds like may or may not be the case), my friend Barbara Miller runs a drop-in center that serves Riverdale and surrounding areas that is located at 5600 Taylor: http://runyourrace.org. Though it's called a "ministry," my guess (knowing Barbara) is that assistance would come without strings...

I also see the woman at the bus stop and also another one who is always right by the door of Rite Aid.  I usually give her a few dollars in cash and by the way, her name is Michelle.  I found out she lost her mother recently.  What I want to say, is that if you talk to these people they are real human beings and they have names and deserve some help.   I would also like to find a solution to help these people.  Sending the police to make them move is not the answer. 
 I wish the social workers would work out in the street instead of in an office cut off from real life.  I will keep praying.  Amen.

You want to see homeless, go about 300 yards south of Riverdale Rd along the NE branch of the Anacostia.  It’s common to see groups of homeless people living in the wooded area on the East side of the creek.

  Might be a "dumb question" but was hoping someone could advise me - If I see someone who I presume to be homeless on the streets on a fairly regular basis, should I contact the police every time, or?  There's a middle-aged African/American woman that I see quite frequently very early in the morning, she seems to stay on the bus benches near the Rite Aid or the Wells Fargo Bank on Route 1.  Sometimes I've seen her in a little fold-up chair.  One time I saw her later in the morning, she seemed to be rather "out of it," for want of a better phrase, so I contacted the police and asked if they could see if she was ok (she insisted she was, but seemed rather incoherent).  I realize that the police/town can't force anyone to get off the streets or go into a shelter; on the other hand, I hate to see someone in that situation, esp. as cold weather will be here soon.  

 

Any suggestions?
