Hi All,
In addition to Not on Our Watch, Rt 1 Social Justice Peace Makers is forming organizational teams for efforts detailed below.  There is a meeting scheduled for Dec 13 and you can join the group on FB to stay in the loop:

For those interested in organizing educational workshops, our next meeting will be Tuesday, December 13th at 7 pm, at the PG Plaza Community Center. 6600 Adelphi Road, Hyattsville. Mtg room #3. We will also be talking more about creating a local Showing up for Racial Justice chapter.

1) We are forming a Green-Line SURJ chapter. This requires us to have 1) a leadership committee, 2) form accountability relationships with local people of color led organizations, and 3) have an action plan.

2) At the same time that we are going through the steps towards creating a formal SURJ chapter, we want to organize three workshops for the spring, each building on the next. The first would be a workshop about implicit bias (we need to find a speaker for this--I am going to ask colleagues at UMD in the Women's Studies department, but any other suggestions would also be welcome!), the second would be a basic workshop on bystander intervention, and the third would be a more advanced workshop on bystander intervention for white folks about white privilege and how to step in without being a "white savior." Jordan Perry has volunteered to facilitate a bystander intervention workshop and offered the two options. We really liked the idea of having a basic one and a more advanced one.

3) Our next meeting is Tuesday, December 13th at 7 pm, at the PG Plaza Community Center. 6600 Adelphi Road, Hyattsville. Mtg room #3

4) Another topic of discussion was community relationships with the police departments in our neighborhoods, interactions with the chief of police in each neighborhood, folks' feelings about recent public safety forums (Univ Park) and community forums with police (Riverdale), concerns about community budgets, and what is deemed "suspicious behavior" by residents and police. Clearly, given local and national concerns, this is something that folks are also interested in organizing around along with these educational workshops.

5) It is also clear from this meeting, and conversations we are having with other folks on and off-line that there is a lot of energy right now towards creating change and getting involved, and we should harness it and make sure we don't lose momentum!
