> About Purple Line Art-In-Transit
> The Purple Line team is looking forward to incorporating unique artwork into Purple Line stations through the Art-in-Transit Program. The purpose of the Art-in-Transit Program is to enhance the travel experience, promote transit use and to engage every community along the proposed 16-mile light rail line. Art will be provided at the stations to make each station unique, enhance the architecture of the station and express the significant character of the community where the station is located.
>
> A public Call for Artists was issued in 2014 and over 700 artists responded by submitting their qualifications. A committee comprised of Purple Line staff and public art experts reviewed the submittals and shortlisted 95 artists. Those 95 artists have been assigned to stations, based on their area of expertise and the opportunities identified for artwork at each station. The Artists will be developing concepts for their assigned location, due at the beginning of 2017. Once the concepts are submitted, a Selection Committee that includes selected community representatives will review the concepts and make the final selection of the artists who will be commissioned to design, fabricate and install the final artwork.
>
> In addition to visual art, the Purple Line is soliciting writers to create a story that reflects the journey of traveling through the 16 miles of the alignment. Each station will feature a piece of the story, set to art so that the story is revealed as the visitor travels on the Purple Line.
>
> Art in Transit can only be truly successful with community input. A series of community meetings are planned to encourage and allow community members to tell the Purple Line Art in Transit staff and artists about their community’s specific character, landmarks, and heritage. The first series of meetings, where the community will “Meet the Artists”, will take place on November 30th in Montgomery County and December 1st in Prince George’s County. Many of the artists will be here to tour their station sites and interact with community members interested in the project. All community members are encouraged to attend.
>
> The second series of community meetings will be scheduled after the artists submit their concepts. These concepts will be presented to the community and their feedback will be collected and provided to the Selection Committee to be considered as the final selections are made. When the Purple Line opens, riders and communities along the line will experience artwork that enlivens the light rail line, expresses the character of the community and enriches the experience of riding the Purple Line.
