The basic physical design of the store is like no other Whole Foods I have ever been in. The last new one was near my office in North Bethesda some years back. I repeat, ours has all the ambiance of a box store-- concrete floors, extremely tall shelving. It also seems smaller than many.

Gee Nina, have some HOPE in Hyattsville. :-)
This is a NEW store. The other stores you mentioned had at least about 10 years to evolve. I'm pretty sure customers at the other stores gave suggestions that made those store what they are today. You are completely giving up on even making suggestions to make the store into what you would like to see. I was at one of the previews and they said you have access to the store manager via text for any suggestions or complaints. Did you even try that?
ANd why would you compare a store that just opened to ones that have been opened for years? Every new store starts out with basic items until they start receiving feedback on what special items the local people prefer. They didn't have Comte cheese when I went on the preview. You can bet I'll let them know. Tell them what you would like to see. All is not lost. If you want what is in other stores, I'm sure they will accommodate you. :-)

I was just at the grand opening. Having been a Whole Foods shopper for decades, shopping at many stores in Maryland and DC, I really do not like this store. The shelving is too high, as in looming like a box store. The floors are ugly concrete, like a box store. They did not have the selection of products that Silver Spring has. It is strangely organized. The cheese dept. and bakery do not match Silver Spring, let alone Georgetown, which has always been my favorite. I left the store this morning and went down to Yes to buy most of my groceries. So much for competition.By the way, their bags and pizza oven say Riverdale, rather than Riverdale Park, which is the city name, or Riversdale, which is the plantation name.We really like the Starbucks though. I am hugely disappointed after our many years wait. Nina

Whole Foods is good. Yay! Competition is good for the consumer. Yay!
I hope Yes Organic Market is able to compete w/ the new Big Kid on the block. It has been very nice to have a small organic market within walking distance. I would hate to see us lose that option. Lately, I have noticed that prices at Yes Organic have been a bit more competitive. So we shall see...
There were also questions about whether the area could support new stores without hurting other area establishments. Stuart Eisenberg, executive director of the Hyattsville Community Development Corporation (HCDC), discussed how the HCDC-commissioned Route 1 Communities Retail Market Study (April 2012; Bolan Smart Associates, Inc.) demonstrated that the Riverdale Park Station plans were unlikely to saturate the market. Eisenberg said, “It showed that there was the demand and the money available. We could afford to put things in and not have crippling competition.” The analysis, he said, showed that the area could likely support, for example, both the Safeway (which opened in April 2016) and the Whole Foods Market.
