Stephen Wade
"Bringing the Book Back Home"

Join author and musician Stephen Wade at Robert Harper Books. In this
evening of live music playing and storytelling, Wade performs songs and
tunes stemming from his acclaimed book, The Beautiful Music All Around Us:
Field Recordings and the American Experience. Since its publication Wade
has made numerous appearances across the United States, a number of them
returning him to the communities where he first conducted his research. For
this performance, he draws together those travels with the music they
inspired. A book signing follows the presentation.
Best known to Washington audiences as the creator and performer of the
record-setting, one-man show Banjo Dancing at Arena Stage, “Wade is a
master at creating compelling narratives that entertain and inform,” wrote
Washington Post reporter Richard Harrington in October 2006. In September
2012, Terry Teachout extended that thought in the Wall Street Journal,
describing Stephen Wade’s book as “a masterpiece of humane scholarship –
but one that reads like a detective story.”
The Beautiful Music All Around Us: Field Recordings and the American
Experience was published in 2012 by the University of Illinois Press. This
504-page study showcases nearly two decades of research during which Wade
tracked down the communities, families, and performers connected with early
Library of Congress field recordings across the American South. These
recordings, which Wade first gathered in A Treasury of Library of Congress
Field Recordings (Rounder Records, 1997), gave rise to his folksong
commentaries that have aired on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and
All Things Considered.
The Beautiful Music All Around Us received the 2013 ASCAP Deems Taylor
award and the 2013 ARSC Best History prize. However, recognition for its
work continues, and in November 2016, Stephen Wade became the first-ever
individual recipient of the Society for Ethnomusicology’s Judith McCulloh
Public Sector award.
Wade, a 2013 Grammy nominee, and currently Visiting Scholar at George
Washington University, directs the American Roots Music Program at Rocky
Ridge Music Center in Estes Park, Colorado. His latest album, Across the
Amerikee: Showpieces from Coal Camp to Cattle Trail, comes out in June 2017
for Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. He is also at work on a three-part
public television film series based on his book, and made by Academy
Award-winning director Paul Wagner.
