Two Salvadoran women are opening a new restaurant today in the former site
of Benny’s Chinese restaurant

Baltimore Ave. in Riverdale Park, just north of Hyattsville’s Arts District.

Las Comadres <http://www.lascomadresmd.com/>, which loosely translates
to “the godmothers,” will serve Salvadoran specialties like pupusas as well
as Tex-Mex favorites like fajitas.

The local restaurant scene reflects Hyattsville’s demographics. About
one-third of the city is Hispanic, according to the 2010 Census
<https://factfinder.census.gov/>, with the majority listing a family origin
in Central American countries like El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras
<https://factfinder.census.gov/>. El Comalito
<https://www.yelp.com/biz/pupuseria-el-comalito-riverdale-park>, a
Salvadoran restaurant just up the street, is always packed; and Guatemalan
chicken chain Pollo Campero added a location

Hyattsville earlier this year.

But Mexican cuisine is still a mainstay of American cuisine, and owners of
the new Las Comadres, Sara Iraheta Reyes and Claudia Cubias, say they want
Las Comadres to be a family-friendly place where everyone feels welcome.
They also have a kids’ menu with hot dogs and chicken tenders and offer
free delivery on any order of $15 or more.

The pair completely gutted the former Benny’s, with a new kitchen designed
to meet their cooking style. And the interior is new and sports bold,
bright colors.

The restaurant will have a soft launch on Friday starting at 6 p.m., with a
grand opening on Saturday, also beginning at 6 p.m., to  include prize
giveaways and special menu options.
