According to the census, approximately one third of our residents are not citizens.  There was no breakdown by age (i.e., voting age or not) of that information.

As for the illegal immigrant questions, I think you should broaden your questions. This legislation also applies to lawful permanent residents and visa holders who are currently excluded from voter registration.  Ergo, I think the question is how many non-citizens do we believe live in our town and how many do we believe will actually participate?

I do know a couple of lawful non citizens in our town who have voiced to me (probably not to the board) that they want to participate in the election process.

I would like to ask Ms. Dixon a few questions in a public forum regarding her proposed legislation.  Some of these questions were brought forward at the last Work Session, but have yet to be answered.  I've added several more.  I think it would help all of us get a better understanding of the reasons behind the voter expansion legislation and the related consequences.  The questions follow.  

1) Roughly how many Town residents indicated to you Ms. Dixon that allowing illegal immigrants to vote was an issue?  When I say Town residents, I mean residents that were not solicited for their opinions on this legislation.  I mean residents that came forward on their own unsolicited and requested that something be done.

2) Have any illegal immigrant residents come forward or been solicited for their views on this legislation?  If so, roughly how many?  Since this legislation impacts the illegal immigrant community, they should be involved in this process.

3) If this legislation is passed, will the Town support the INS if they decide to perform an immigration sweep at the polls on election day (yes or no)?  If the answer is no, does this mean that Riverdale Park is a sanctuary city?

4) At the polls, how will the Town confirm that an illegal immigrant is at least 16 years of age and has been a resident of the Town for 45 days?

5) Assuming this legislation is passed, how will the Town determine it's efficacy and if illegal immigrants are voting? 

We as a Town need to reflect carefully on the reasons for this legislation and the related consequences.  Before even considering it's passage, definitive answers are needed for questions 2, 3, 4, and 5 at the very least.  I think all of us want transparency so lets have it.
