[RP TownTalk] Preservation Month & Rivers to Rockets Weekends

Hello friends,
I wanted to pass along the word that May is a VERY busy month. There are so many things happening. Maryland Milestones has branded this "Rivers to Rockets Weekends" - a chance to celebrate the long history of our region through a variety of events and programs. We hope you can come out for some of them. All the listings can be found at marylandmilestones.org 
Additionally, May is also Preservation Month. Our partners have a whole host of activities planned: 
 Wednesday, May 9, 8:00 pm – “Citizen Jane” Screening – Jane Jacobs fight to save New York City from Robert Moses’ highway construction plan is legendary in planning and historic preservation. Learn about Jacob’s fights with this new documentary at the Old Greenbelt Theatre. Afterward, University of Maryland professors Dr. Mary Corbin Sies and Dr. Isabelle Gournay will speak about Jacobs’ legacy. (Old Greenbelt Theatre, 129 Centerway, Greenbelt, MD) 
Thursday, May 10, 6:30 pm – Book Launch for “US Route 1: Baltimore to Washington DC” – Maryland Milestones/ATHA Inc. is proud to launch a new Arcadia Publishing publication celebrating the history US Route 1. Executive Director and author Aaron Marcavitch will lead a photographic presentation and discussion on this historic road. Books will be on sale. The program is co-sponsored by Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. (Riversdale House Museum, 4811 Riverdale Road, Riverdale Park, MD)
Wednesday, May 16, 5:30 pm – Windsock Arms Happy Hour Celebrates Preservation Month - Try out a new specialty cocktail while chatting with Meagan Baco from Preservation Maryland, the guest bartender. Enjoy after-hours access to the Aviation Museum exhibits, socialize with friends, and snack on appetizers provided by Geppetto Catering. This event is for ages 21 & over only. Thursday, May 17, 6:00 pm – Best of Maryland Reception - Preservation Maryland celebrates this year’s Best of Maryland award winners - including ATHA Inc.’s Aaron Marcavitch, the Gearhart Professional Service award winner! Tickets start at just $20 and include a plentiful BBQ buffet with local beer and wine, and an opportunity to tour The Star-Spangled Banner Flag House museum and grounds. Thursday, May 24, 6:30pm – Prince George’s County Annual Historic Preservation Reception – This celebration of historic preservation will be at the Publick Playhouse. Professor William Thomas III will present a film about Ann Williams from Bladensburg and her fight for freedom. Awards for preservation work  and heritage tourism will be made. Program hosted by the Prince George’s County Historical Society, M-NCPPC Historic Preservation Division, and the Prince George’s Parks and Recreation Natural and Historic Resources Division. Thursday, May 31, 7:30pm – “African Americans in World War I: The Legacy and Commemoration” – Dr. Dennis Doster, director of the M-NCPPC Black History Program, will be speaking about his research on the legacy of African-Americans in World War I and the commemoration of soldiers through monuments.
