Hello all:
Please utilize the link that Mr. Dimakas provided. This is the latest from the County fire department based upon the new State law.
Here it is again:
http://pgfdpio.blogspot.com/2018/01/pgfd-faqs-about-new-maryland-smoke.html
There is information regarding hardwired smoke detectors within this link. After 10 years, both battery-powered and hardwired smoke detectors lose sensitivity after 10 years.
Please continue to ask questions and I will work to find answers for the community.
Steve

Pretty sure hardwired smoke alarms are NOT to be removed if they are operational. NEVER replace hardwired smoke alarms with battery operated smoke alarms if it was installed after July, 1 1978
There has been a lot of confusion with the law so please visit the the county fire department page:

Steve,
I have hard wired smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, older then 10 years, connected to an alarm system. They do go off if we burn something on the stove. Are you saying these should be replaced?

Many of you know that the State of Maryland has a new law regarding smoke detectors effective 1 January. Detailed information is just being made available. Here is a summary:
* New detectors have a 10-year life with a sealed battery that does not require periodic replacement.
* If you have a smoke detector older than 10 years, replace it. This included hardwired detectors.
* How do you know if it is older than 10 years? Remove the cover. There should be a date of manufacturer. If there is not a date of manufacturer, it is older than 10 years.
* Correct replacement smoke detectors and combination smoke/carbon monoxide detectors may be purchased at any hardware-type store.
* At a minimum, every level (top of stairs) of your home should have a detector, including outside of sleeping areas. Ideally, there should be a detector in every sleeping area.
* It is my understanding that every rental home, condominium, and apartment, as well as newly constructed and newly purchased homes are to have the new smoke detector in every sleeping area. The County intends to strictly enforce this portion of the law.
* Just a reminder that either a standalone or combination carbon monoxide detector should be placed within 5-20 feet of carbon monoxide sources, i.e. gas and oil furnaces, gas hot water heaters, gas dryers, gas stoves/ovens, etc.
If you need new smoke detectors, contact the County using the 311 service.
