[RP TownTalk] June 30 9AM University Park March to Keep Families Together

Radically changed?  Don't you mean enforcing immigration laws enacted by candidates you may have voted for.

This whole thing is about enforcing immigration law.  Trump and Sessions didn't make these laws, but they have every right to enforce them as written.  Based on your comments below, people who enter this country illegally should not be held accountable for their actions.   Trump and Sessions should give them a "hall pass" because the liberal media has spun "separating families" into an international crisis.  When unaccompanied minors enter this country illegally, are Trump and Sessions separating them from their families?

As I said earlier, if you don't like the law do something about it and call your representative.  Complaining about Trump and Sessions accomplishes nothing.   The courts can't do anything to stop them.  Why?  Because they are enforcing immigration law.

Bruce

I don't support the use of the list for tedious debate, but I can't let misstatements of fact stand. I'll keep this brief:

Bruce, you are correct to note the relevance of Flores settlement, however, you are mistaken in believing that the current administration wants to comply with it. In fact, Trump's Executive Order requires Sessions to seek to modify Flores, and that modification request was filed 2 weeks ago.
https://www.refugeesinternational.org/reports/2018/6/28/trumps-executive-order-and-the-flores-settlement-explained-bswdt

Also, you are correct that Trump has not changed immigration law--as the Executive, he does not have the power to change the law. However, he and Sessions have *radically* changed immigration policy and practice, which amounts to the same thing for people on the ground.

Finally, you are incorrect in believing that Trump/Sessions were trying to "deal with the 'separating families' issue". In fact, they created the issue intentionally as a deterrent to migration.

All

Please read item 2 in the following link.  Note the year that this settlement was reached.  The government is required to take care of unaccompanied children who cross the border illegally.  This fact seems to have been overlooked by liberal media and spun into "separating families".

https://www.humanrightsfirst.org/resource/flores-settlement-brief-history-and-next-steps

Trump and Sessions have not changed immigration law.  They are enforcing immigration law as written (zero tolerance).  I don't know about you, but I want POTUS and the AG to enforce the law as written not cherry pick the parts they want to enforce.

If you want to help these kids, stop blaming Trump/Sessions for something that happened in ~1997, stop the unending outrage and protests that accomplish nothing.  Call call your representative and demand that they address these and other immigration related issues (DACA for example).  Trump attempted to address "separating families" with his recent executive order, but that won't help unaccompanied children illegally crossing the border.

Without the spin, Trump is the first president since 1997 (that I'm aware of) who by executive order took a stab at dealing with the "separating families" issue.  Some of you and the liberal media respond by demonstrating, marching, protesting, blockading ICE offices, demanding that ICE be dissolved, saying Trump's responsible for "separating families", and of course endless outrage.  If ICE is dissolved, who going to take care of the unaccompanied children illegally crossing the border?

You can't make this stuff up.  It's unbelievable.

Can we keep the childish political bickering on Facebook? I like this forum for local politics at best. These conversations aren't going to change any minds so let's move on. I prefer my Riverdale list serv to be about local issues like a couch for sale, fun local events, community gatherings, new restaurants etc not this. Thanks.

I wouldn't call it "cleaning up". Trump is continuing and exacerbating an already bad immigrant policy. I agree that marches were definitely merited during the Obama administration (he wasnt called the "deporter in chief " for nothing).  but this is a policy that needs to be stopped and kudos to people for stepping up to march and protest. Better late than never, right?

Hardly, Trump is cleaning up the immigration mess made by Obama, Bushes, Clinton ...  Stop blaming him for enforcing existing immigration laws.  The liberal media doesn't want to talk about this because it doesn't suit their narrative and apparently yours.

Why didn't these marches occur before Trump took office.  This separation thing has been going on for awhile.  Does this mean anything to you marchers?

We'll be there. The UN cited our country with Human Rights violations. How embarrassing. Trump needs to go, he is turning the country into a shithole
