TOPIC: Railroad Hazards, Safety, and Emergency Response

AGENDA

TOPIC INTRODUCTION: The goals of today's meeting are to further the Town's
understanding of railroad hazards, safety, and emergency response; and to encourage any requisite follow-up by those in attendance, along with members of the public.
In the last three (3) months there have been high-profile train derailments. In 2016, a train derailment and chemical spill occurred in Northeast Washington D.C. Should a similar incident occur in Riverdale Park or neighboring jurisdiction, coordination and cooperation among the jurisdictions will be necessary to ensure an effective response.

Amtrak Police: Deputy Chief Maureen Powers of the Amtrak PD (15 minutes)

Prince Georges County Fire Department / Riverdale Volunteers (15 minutes)
Overview - Response to mass casualty / derailment / chemical spill

Prince Georges County Police Department (15 minutes)
Overview - Police District I & Special Operations Division - mass casualty

Riverdale Park Police Department: (5 minutes)
Role and cooperation among local authorities

ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION: (15 minutes)
1. How can the community and emergency responders be better prepared to respond to this type of an incident?
2. Are there policy, communication, and funding issues that need to be further examined?
3. Are local jurisdictions involved in training and response simulations? If not, should they be included? Next steps?
