Prince George's County Family Justice Center,
An Initiative of the Circuit Court, Hosts The Glow Up: Teen Empowerment Summit

On Saturday, March 31, 2018, the Prince George's County Family Justice Center, an initiative of the Circuit Court, in partnership with An Earthly Embrace and Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation hosted The Glow-Up: Teen Empowerment Summit at the Tucker Road Community Center. The Glow-Up: Teen Empowerment Summit is the inaugural outreach and educational event for the Prince George's County Family Justice Center's teen empowerment thrust. The summit provided teens, ages 13 to 18, an opportunity to learn about teen dating violence.

The summit opened with remarks by the Honorable Sheila R. Tillerson Adams, Administrative Judge of the Circuit Court for Prince George's County. During her opening remarks, Judge Adams briefly shared her vision for the Prince George's County Family Justice Center. Following, local artist, Kayla Adams, performed an original spoken word piece on teen dating violence and serenaded the attendees with a captivating rendition of Andra Day's song, "Rise Up."

As the teens engaged with one another and local advocates during their breakout sessions, parents were encouraged to attend a special session, For Parents Only. The special session for parents featured a passionate discussion led by motivational speaker and domestic violence advocate, Mignon Brown-Anderson. Brown-Anderson recounted her experience of losing her daughter and niece to domestic violence several years ago. Annette Solomon, LICSW, highlighted the red flags and warning signs of domestic violence while leading the parents in an interactive role-playing exercise.

Following, parents and their teens, enjoyed an empowerment session with motivational speaker, Lee Junior, who highlighted their significance and encouraged each participant to lay down their crowns for others. At the conclusion of the summit, teens and parents expressed their overall delight with the event.

"You have no idea how many lives were positively changed today because of this summit," a parent stated.

The Prince George's County Family Justice Center looks forward to providing further discourse on teen dating violence, an issue significantly impacting the youngest residents of Prince George's County.

Prince George's County Family Justice Center,
An Initiative of the Circuit Court, Hosts The Trickle Effect:
A Roundtable Discussion on the Invisible Signs of Domestic Violence and the Negative Impact on Children

The Prince George's County Family Justice Center, an initiative of the Circuit Court, hosted The Trickle Effect: A Roundtable Discussion on the Invisible Signs of Domestic Violence and the Negative Impact on Children. The discussion was held on Thursday, March 29, 2018 in partnership with NEHE Foundation and EYSONU Productions, a local small business that raises awareness of child abuse and domestic violence through vocal performances. The roundtable discussion allowed community residents to engage with local advocates and service providers regarding the impact of domestic violence on children.

Shene' Magee, founder of the NEHE Foundation, opened the discussion with a riveting audio clip of a little girl's call to 911 as she witnessed the horrific beating of her mother at the hands of her stepfather. This emotional clip provided the perfect opening for the discussion as Ms. Magee highlighted the likelihood of children who have been exposed to domestic violence repeating the cycle by either becoming victims or perpetrators.

Next, Dine' White, LCPC, a trauma therapist who specializes in providing psychotherapy to youth and young adults at Prince George's Community College, shared the social and emotional effects of domestic violence on children. Following, Lt. Matthew Barba of the Prince George's County Police Department discussed current legislation related to child witnesses of domestic violence which ignited a lively yet candid discussion in which attendees were able to share their personal experiences. One attendee acknowledged the impact of domestic violence on her children, who saw their father abuse her for many years during their childhood. Now as adults, the children have broken the cycle of domestic violence by engaging in healthy relationships.

The Trickle Effect is the first of many roundtable discussions the Prince George's County Family Justice Center will institute as it remains committed to informing, educating and empowering the residents of Prince George's County.
