[RP TownTalk] MARC Cornerstone Plan

I was excited to see the recommendations put forward by the MARC Cornerstone Plan for RP and Camden Line expansion. I'll bring up the issue at our December work session in order to develop a plan moving forward to advocate on behalf of expansion.

Hi,
It?s Jim Coleman of the farmers market. We had some last minute
cancellations for trolley elves for December 14Th so we need more. Can you
help us? The job is basically navigating the trolley and caroling all the
way to the market and from Riversdale Mansion.
The hours are 515 to about 815 PM. Please contact me if you have any
questions.

I have actually reached out to our councilman Aaron Faulx about this. He said it has to go to the State level and be brought up at a meeting in which state reps are present. Hoping that happens soon. My low bar suggestion is to have the 2 trains that currently pass through RP but don?t stop actually stop there. (There?s one around 8:30 am and one around 5:30 pm coming back from DC.)
I?m personally willing to take signatures from town members in support of it, but until it gets on the docket at the state level, there would be no platform to show such signatures.

I would use it all the time in the summer to get to Orioles games, but the schedule makes it impossible.

I used to ride the train every day to commute up to the Baltimore Medical
Center. I loved that train ride!

I remember asking the conductor why they didn't run trains for the Orioles
games, and he said that they used to, but some people would get *really*
drunk at the games and the rides home were a nightmare for those who
weren't drunk. Eventually they couldn't find conductors willing to work the
games, and so CSX canceled the service.

which reminds me of another selling point (your mileage may vary!) for the
MARC: you can eat and drink, including alcoholic beverages, on the train!!

(re baseball trains, there's this article which has a slightly different
take on it, talks about ongoing CSX-MARC tensions, with no mention of drunk
fan-passengers.)

Interesting article Dwight. Gets right to Jonathan's point about the issue
being that CSX is *always* trying to reduce service.

>From the article:

----

"CSX is trying to improve the speed and reliability of its freight service,
and the nighttime trains returning from the ballpark often slowed down the
already slow-moving freight and coal trains the company runs at night, Ms.
Burns said.

"In the long term," it may not be possible for freight trains and commuter
trains to share rail lines in Maryland, she said.

[snip]

A five-year service contract with CSX expired in October. and negotiations
on a new contract are continuing.

The baseball trains were not part of the contract, and Mr. Agro said CSX
recently has "taken the position that anything outside the contract, we're
not doing."

"I think parties are always looking for leverage in negotiations," he said,
though adding that CSX's action reflects "genuine concern" over conflicts
between freight and passenger service.

----

CSX doesn't care about passenger service at ALL - their freight operations
are vastly more profitable. They were granted the rights to run freight
trains on the tracks only so long as they also provided passenger service.

This is where I think it's important to remember that advocacy at both the
local AND state level is important. The state is part of the team
negotiating the agreements with CSX. I'm unsure how the Town is involved.
Hopefully someone In The Know will weigh in about that.

p.s. I was reporting what the conductor told me. I wonder if that was just
his take on his experiences, or if he was told that by his supervisors. I
have to confess that the article has the ring of truth to it.

Subject: [RP TownTalk] College Park Academy Joins RPBA

*College Park Academy Joins RPBA*

*Riverdale Park, Md., Dec. 6, 2019* -- The College Park Academy (CPA)
<https://collegeparkacademy.net/>, a Prince George?s County public charter
school offering a rigorous college preparatory education for students in
grades 6-12, has joined the Riverdale Park Business Association, becoming
the group?s latest new member. RPBA, which fell dormant last year and was
reconstituted in January 2019, represents and promotes businesses in
greater Riverdale Park, MD.

?We are thrilled to have a learning institution of College Park Academy?s
stature join us as we push to promote businesses in our community and to
engage community leaders and officials in smoothing the way for business
growth and expansion,? said Michael Herman, Esq, president of RPBA. ?The
Academy has made impressive inroads in higher education since its founding
in 2013 including producing its first senior graduating class last May and
we look forward to partnering with them in the future.?

The Academy is indeed unique. In addition to an impressive selection of
course offerings which includes 13 AP courses and seven foreign languages,
CPA students have the added benefit of access to college-level classes and
programs, clubs, and events led by University of Maryland professors and
students. Students are challenged academically and encouraged to excel,
based on their own merits and not of their peers. This non-traditional
approach to acceleration provides them with the rigor that they need to
remain challenged. It also provides Academy teachers the opportunity to
work closely with the students that are experiencing challenges with
certain concepts. With the expert guidance and assistance from professors
and students from UMD, the Academy?s faculty, staff, and students are
challenged and supported. In fact, two CPA students in May graduated high
school a year early, and many others graduated with college credits under
their belts.

?We are very proud of this first graduating high school class and see in
their success evidence that this innovative model of education works,?
UMDPresident and Board Chair of the College Park Academy Wallace D. Loh
said in a press release issued at the time. ?Thanks to the combined efforts
of political leaders, the community, the university, parents, and the
students, this public-charter, blended-learning approach is the future of
education.?

?College Park Academy is delighted to connect to the Riverdale Park
community,? said Duane Arbogast, Ed.D., Chief of Strategy and Innovation at
The Children's Guild and Interim Executive Director at the Academy. ?We
believe we this association will allow for deep relationships with local
businesses and community leaders. We think the benefit will be mutual.?

We?d love for your business to also become a member of Riverdale Park
Business Association. Please join us at our holiday party next Wednesday,
Dec. 11 and take the opportunity to become a 2020 member of RPBA. Meet with
our local political and business leaders. Let's share some fellowship,
great food and grog in the company of people who care as much as you do
about where we live and work. Join today and get the 13th month for FREE!

breweries, cideries and distillers. While the small business panelists
reported that business has been good generally, there could be trouble
ahead as Congress ponders whether to extend federal excise tax relief for
