It's up to us to ensure that there is "affordable" housing included in
any development in our town, even (especially) if the development as a
whole is higher-end. Assuming the folks living on the Cafritz property
couldn't even afford "affordable" housing, would we as a community
welcome a shelter of some kind, somewhere in our town? Not something
huge like CCNV, but something more in scale with our community? How,
concretely, would we welcome it -- make it happen?
I personally have no idea what it takes, but it just so happens that
the new editor of Street Sense just introduced herself over on the HOPE
list. Koki, I wonder if you could suggest someone who might put on a
little workshop for concerned citizens of our port towns area on the
issues surrounding homeless shelters, transitional and affordable
housing? There is so much development going on right now, this would
seem to be the time to take measures to ensure that we be part of the
solution, and not part of the already critical problem of housing in
the whole DC metro area.
hoping that is actually Koki's e-mail address, as the yahoo list scrubs
the domain names.....
I know that there is quite a population of homeless people that live
on the Cafritz property. To be honest, it's one of my worries about
developing that property. If they can't live there, where are they
going to go?

This sounds like the same lady who was lounging under the tree next
to the
culvert earlier in the week. This one sounds like she needs to go
elsewhere. Is there a shelter in the area? I've seen people from
my window
at work changing their socks and doing basic morning things on the
lawn at
Crescent Cities. They get chased off pretty quickly, but if there
is a
shelter in the area - this might be the source.
