I've been a longtime resident of the Riverdale/Hyattsville area (about 37 years). Man, I've got to tell you -- boy, are times a-changin'....I can remember a time when streets were clean, and there was legitimate business activity going on, and when you told people you lived over in Riverdale/Hyattsville, they didn't look at you funny and go, "....Oh."

When people ask me where I live now, I have to generalize it and say "College Park." And that's pretty sad, when you're kinda ashamed to tell people where you really live. Here's a couple of examples of what I'm talking about:

1. I drive up my street in Riverdale and see a guy taking a leak in the bushes. I glance at him and he simply gives me that silly little grin and goes about his "business."

2. Used condoms and hypodermic syringes littering my street, late-night prostitution
activity, and open-air drug deals.

3. I go into my local donut shop and the vestibule reeks of urine.

4. Filthy parking lots...so filthy that I feel like I need to throw away my shoes (even though they're brand new) after I walk on them.

5. The Kenilworth Avenue corridor is a disgrace. Hundreds upon hundreds of illegal immigrants and ne'er-do-wells. They love to cross the street in the middle of traffic, too -- how many more times will I have to slow down and/or swerve before I accidentally hit somebody?

6. The once-wonderful Park Tanglewood apartments are now, in my opinion, nothing short of a sleazy tenement. Ditto for the Oglethorpe House.

7. Gee, I feel like there's some kind of Underground Railroad going on every time I look out my window, what with the constant comings and goings of buses, vans, and trailers full of immigrants whose legal status is clearly a question mark. These people throw chicken bones, beer cans, and other
trash over my fence and also in the street, and I'm sick of it.

I got a message for you people out there who are talking about providing convenient porta-potties and possible job centers for these people who have no legitimate or legal reason for being here: I'm sick and tired of shelling out my tax dollars to a state, county, and a town that is absolutely deaf, dumb, and blind and obviously doesn't care about me. So to you I say, wake up and smell the frijole beans, folks....let's round 'em up and move 'em out now before it's too late (which it may already be).

Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com
The most personalized portal on the Web!
